So my favorite online car blog reviewed the 5 GT and they said, yep, its the "Ultimate Passenger Machine"

Here's a linky to the review, if anyone cares to inspect the scribbles.

On an even sadder note, I happened to see one on the road a few days ago and I must say, it looks hideous. All those Pontiac Aztec comparisons are not without merit - this is truly a design and engineering experiment that could use "some" LCI - preferably, RIGHT NOW!

On a brighter note, I think photographers actually figured out a few nice angles to this thing, so the pics that came with the review on autoblog actually contain a couple of shots where I even like this "car".

But the overall impression? Its either Gran Coupe or no "gran" at all, as far as BMW's line-up goes - at least, for yours truly.

Best,

V.

You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear!! My guess is that it does NOT last long in BMW's lineup!

Have to agree FP - this thing is isn't going to last more than a couple of model years before it is taken outside and shot...

Isn't the same said about the X5, X6, Cayenne when launched? It is always the same history when you create something new.

Not really - at least in the case of the X5 and Cayenne there was clear market demand and both the X5 and Cayenne went on to be very successful vehicles. The 5GT is not proving to be a car that is equally adept at capturing hearts, minds and wallets.

Has anyone even bought one of these things yet? I haven't seen a single one outside of the dealer's lot. Anyone seen one being driven by a non-BMW employee yet?

I saw two on the road so far - both had plates, so someone must've bought them. Actually, I have a buddy who owns a CLS right now and he actually said he liked the car. Though he was considerably loaded at the moment LOL

I think you just forgot the past. Both Porsche and BWM were heavily criticized when launched both cars, because they were completely different from their line up at that time. The success later on just proved the initial critics to wrong... or not. Because a market success doesn't mean necessarily a good or a bad car.

The fact is that BMW again is creating a new category and this will always demand sometime to get used to the new concept. It's natural.
