September 2010 sales of the new F10 look ho-hum. Sales in Sep. were 6% lower than the prior month (Aug) and 4% lower than E60 sales the in same month last year. Meanwhile, E-Class sales were up 44% over last year to 4,711 units. And overall U.S. sales in Sep. jumped 29% over last year.

Thanks Rudy ... I've been traveling for work a ton lately and I didn't get a chance to see swajames's post until after I quickly logged on and posted mine.

My source for sales data was unplugged for couple of months but is back on track ... so I should continue to get all US sales figures going forward (usually about 3-4 days after the close).

What do you mean, that your 4% figure in post#1 is incorrect, is it not? The number last Sept for the E60 with all its variants was 2861, ie the F10 with limited models is down by only 2 cars with 2859. Merc September 2009 E class sales was 3,812.

Of the 2,859 units of 5 series sold in September 2010 (according to the BMW Group sales chart), 114 of those were GTs (according to my proprietary data source). That leaves 2,745 units sold last month, compared to 2,861 sold in the same month last year. That's a 4% decline.

Even worse, the current sales figures released by BMW do not distinguish F10 sales from left-over E60 sales (there are more than 700 E60s sitting on dealer lots right now according to a search on cars.com). So let's say that something like 100 E60s were sold and reported as part of the total BMW 5 series sales figures. That means that the true comparison of F10 sales now to E60 sales from one year ago may be an even bigger decline of 7.5%.

MB E-Class sales in September 2009 were 3,278. The 3,812 count also includes 534 E-Class Coupe sales. Sales last month for the E-Class were 4,711 (plus 897 Coupe).

Further, in September 2009, BMW 5 series held a market share of 22% of the mid-size luxury sedan market. That share is now down to 17%.

Does your more detailed information provide the nos of the E60 variants for Sept 2009, that are available for the F10 in September 2010 so that we can compare like for like (ie 535i, 550i and maybe partly the 528i but excluding the Xdrive, M, 525i ?etc)? And what is the significance of the BMW US sales for the 5 series being lower for Aug 2010 compared to 2009, but the sales of the 5 series being very much higher worldwide? When is a sales considered effected, when the customer orders (but I understand that it can be rejected at the last moment in the US), delivered or etc?

The data I have only shows 5 series sales and then separately 5 series GT sales.

I believe sales are counted upon delivery of a vehicle to a customer.

There are still very few F10 models, or configurable options for that matter. No x-drive, the touring model just appeared, no M5, etc. You can't compare yet to E60 sales in 2009 which offered much more options and configurations.
