The end of the warranty period sometimes creates a blip, especially in German cars.

Looking at Porsche Boxster data, I found we had a blip year after year with six-year-old cars--the point where the CPO warranty ends.

We've updated our reliability stats for the 5-Series to include owner experiences through December 31, 2013.

Repair frequencies, in terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2013 5-Series: 22, low
2012 5-Series: 44, moderate, small sample size
2011 5-Series: 43, moderate

We have two additional statistics, "Nada-odds" and "Lemon-odds", to indicate the percentage of cars with no repairs in the past year and those that required 3+ trips to the repair shop:

2011 5-Series: 72, < 1

We'll have further updates in May and in August. The more owners participate, the more comprehensive and precise these will be.

The F10 528i Model 2011 that i owned for a year had acceleration lag problems. This was felt whenever the car was standing still and started to move. A terrible feeling when you are in roundabouts and need a fast acceleration. Whenever the gas pedal was pressed, nothing will happen for a few seconds and then a sudden power comes in throwing your neck back onto the head rest. The dealer did everything you would imagine to repair it but the same problem was never repaired. The repair included resetting the gearbox, changing the gearbox and updating the software. This is the worst BMW I have ever owned.

My 2012 F10 550i xDrive has been the least reliable by the three V8 5 Series cars I have had. I have had to replace the fuel injectors twice. The water pump failed. The turbo cooling pump failed. The turbo coolant lines burst and had to be replaced. It has spent a lot of time in at the dealer leaving me with a loaner. By contrast, my E39 540 had no repairs in three years and my E60 550 only had one repair in three years -- a failed starter motor.

Sounds like you got an outlier. Little consolation when you're the one with it, I know.

We've updated our reliability stats for the 5-Series to include owner experiences through September 30, 2014.

Additional participants always helpful (especially if you see "small sample size" next to the year, or no stat at all).
