There are many factors working against diesel in the U.S.:
Diesel costs just as much if not more than premium. I'd bet that most people who own a BMW or any car that "requires" premium use mid-grade or regular at least some of the time. Can't cheat with diesel - and the high price is definitely a turn-off.
Diesel engines require more maintenance - the fuel filter has to be replaced more frequently than on unleaded engines.
Diesel is still not available everywhere - I see far more gas stations that don't have it compared to ones that do. However, I think certain gas companies carry diesel at all of their locations.
Many people who remember the diesel powered cars of the 80's are probably still emotionally scarred from the experience and will never consider buying another one.
And for many auto enthusiasts - a diesel engine just doesn't sound as good as a gas engine.

+1
All good points.
The bottom line is, as good as diesel is, hybrids are just more "sexy" and is much more marketable and palatable to consumers, esp. in the US.

The 335d sedans have been languishing on homeowner a lot and there is some topic whether the 2012 style amount time will see them presented in to the USA. Too bad, since I realistic information they provide a more sensible mix of perform and overall gas practice.

Sure, Hybrid Cars are famous for its sophisticated looks and outstanding designs, but this one is much different than the others.
BMW had put the hybrid system in because BMW will always favor performance over economy so the 4 cylinder's economy would have been optimized just like the 6 cylinder's and only net a couple of extra miles per gallon.
I love the series of bluish color of BMW ActiveHybrid 5 car.
