Well I guess it means a couple of trips in the USA to buy one. At $50K US vs 63K CAN$ with the dollar almost at par It's a no brainer!

It depends on the options and how many roadblocks BMW will throw up to stop the migration of cars northward.

Firstly we'll have to se whether the car is listed as "importable" into canada from the USA. BMW has to provide this information to Transport Canada. If they choose not to, the vehicle can't be imported period. Assuming this hurdle is cleared, BMW will need to provide a clearance certificate (that there are no outstanding safety recalls). BMW charges for the certificate (and it isn't $25.00). Then there is the warranty transfer cost and any other costs associated with Canadian-izing the vehicle (bumper changes, etc -if needed). Finally, I think it will be difficult to find a dealer who will sell a new unit to a Canadian,so a profit for a broker will be necessary.

At optioned out 550i will approach $90,000 $CAD. If there is a $20,000 spread from the same car in teh USA, then you might save $10 - 12,000. I guess time will tell.

It is on the list of Transport Canada. NO problem there

6.1% Alena tax 100$ for excise tax and less than a $1000 for the changes (minor), certificate and inspection within one month of importing the car... The warranty is valid and covered by BMW Canada. You do have to pay for service for the first 3 years because the free maintenance program is not transferable.

After phoning US dealers no problems finding one that will gladly sell me one.

Montreal is a 1 hour drive from the US borders so no shipment charges. Will just pick it up.

If you have the time and don't mind paperwork you will still save around around 8,000$ for a 535i even more for a 550i oubviously. If the CAN $ goes up around 1,05-1,08 like 3 years ago then it eill hurt the Canadian dealers and you will see BMW Canada offer a rebate like they did in 2006-2007

I didn't see a sports package option under the 550i. Did I miss that?

Nope, even after all the taxes, fees etc its still cheaper to get the car from the States. This time around I bought my M6 from the states, got it $15,000 cheaper after everything... Guess that leaves $15,000 for mods lol

The 2011 BMW models are not currently listed on Transport Canada's website so they are not importable at this time. We'll have to wait until they appear before the cars can cross the border. Also, BMW will not issue a clearance certificate until all of the required modifications are completed by a BMW dealer in Canada. We'll have to see if BMW has done anything to the current car (F10) to limit it's import appeal given the cost to make modifications. It would be BMW's way of maintaining higher pricing in Canada without the threat of rampant imports from the USA. It will remain to be seen whether BMW has changed the game since the $CAD was at parity with the $USD in 2007/8. In the mean time, an $8,000 savings won't be enough to lure me to the USA for a 535i. After a broker is involved and a clearance certificate is issued by BMW, I'd be surprised if there s $5,000 in savings. Not enough for the hassle (for me, anyway). A 6 month old model might be a better buy - around Xmas.

You really think BMW world headquarters planned something special to limit import in the Canadian market? Believe me it's a huge company and Canada a very small market for them...to make exceptions in design engineering or supply chain would not be cost efficient .. ..I don t think so ...talking about an hassle !!! They ll react like they did last time...Anyway they want to sell cars and it would not be a wise move if the competition doesn't limit them

As for the approval, all BMW models from 1995 to 2010 ( and those from their main competitors) are on the list. http://www.riv.ca/VehicleAdmissibility.aspx
I don't think the 2011 will be any different. Obviously it will have to be available in the USA and probably in Canada to have it confirmed and to import it.

8,000$ and 12,000$ for a 550i( conservatively and counting because the CAN$ is worth more than the greenback this morning!) is good enough for me. Its also about a principle. I'm sick of beeing short changed and paying more than in the USA for the same stuff..

JMHO
