Check this out ... and if someone can translate German better than AltaVista it would be helpful. But what it seems to say is ...

Next generation 5 series will debut at the 2009 (September) Frankfurt IAA Show as a 2010 model year. Engines to range from 170 HP to 480 HP.

The 480 HP mark is something new, I think ... we've read about 420 HP (direct injection V-8?). Maybe the 480 HP is a twin-turbo? Wheeee!

Other interesting bits:

- The Gran Turismo (CS concept) will be built in 2010 with 2 engine choices: 420HP V-8 and the current M5/6 engine with 507HP.

- The new 7 series will come out in late Summer 2008 ... with styling cues from the CS - and an all-wheel drive option?

- Lot's of new alternative power plant options including full-hybrids and plug-in pure electric road vehicles.

Interesting times ahead for BMW enthusiasts. :)

The main story is that BMW needs to come up with an environmental friendly solution, because the US demands of Large Vehicle Manufacturer to sell emissionfree cars. Norbert reithofer is still vauge about how this will happen but apparantly BMW is planning a new 3-door citycar that will fall under this "emission free" segment. Also, the article mentions the increasing demand for smaller, environmentally friendlier cars where BMW today cannot present a premium alternative.

Apparantly, the first idea was to reintroduce Triumph as the be the bearer of the new Eco-label, but the name isn't protected well enough in all markets, so the Executive Baord have played anotehr card - to invent a new name, more "arty". AutoZeitung then reveals one of the names that is currently being discussed, "Just", as this was used in 1995 when BMW presented an unconvential two-seater at Tokyo Motor Show.

The new car will probably be front wheel driven, and won't be on the market before 2011. Included is of course BMW's Efficient Dynamics, but also a Hybrid version that will be able to drive up to 30 kms using Lithium-Ion-batteries. Furthermore, one version will probably be a "Plug-in" electric car with capability of at least 100 kms and that will be able to reload using a standard 220V plug.

The car will be build by BMW, and probably in Dingolfing. The platform will either be made in cooperation with Daimler or with PSA & Fiat.

I'm currently thinking my next car will be an F10 M5... but it's a long way away, who knows what will happen by then :)

170?!? Sheesh that seems way low. I'm sure the F10 will be heavier than the current incarnation.... I don't see 170 pushing an F10 along very fast.

It refers to the engine currently sold as 520d in Europe. As the F10/F11 will be a little lighter I don't think it will be all that bad...

we wont be buying any F10 before Spring of 2010...
