What makes them think it's a B5 and not an M5? What distinguishes it?

On the M5 the camouflage has the white pattern over black, Alpina has the black on white! DUH!

the first thing that springs to mind is the number plate -- thats the area where Alpina are based.

The license plate is Alpina.

BMW M and BMW use: M-.. ....
Alpina uses: OAL-.. ....

The fact it has OAL- and then just numbers prove it's at an early stage. Later those prototypes have regular license plates with two letters after the OAL-, followed by up to four digits (same applies for BMW cars with M- license plates, btw).
