In the UK there is a £5k difference between the 535d and 535i. The BHP of both is near identical and the 535d has 50% more torque. I've only driven the 530d so far and really enjoyed the wave of torque. In terms of mpg I only do 8k miles a year so don't think I'd ever recover the £5k differential in fuel costs.

So my question is whether the 535i engine is as nice, powerful and enjoyable as the 535d

Thanks

If it were me, I'd get the 535d....like you said, way more torque than the 535i and better fuel economy (esp. if you decide to go on a road trip). You have to remember that the F10 is a heavy car...you need all the power you can get to have the best experience. However, if your finances are a limiting factor, the 535i is alright, too.

The 535d delivers in two areas that the 535i doesn't....

First is acceleration in the gears - in the 535d overtaking is amazing, it builds speed so quickly it's difficult to take in ( friend of mine runs an M3, and when following me reckons the (E60) 535d is faster from 40 to 70)

The second is throttle response; the 535d is almost like a directly proportional electric switch - you touch the throttle and it really goes. My wife runs a 335i, and whilst its fast, after driving the 535d, the 335i throttle feels like its connected via elastic.

The 535d sits above the 535i and 530d in price, but is a different experience - you need to try it before you settle for the 535i.

On a financial note - the 535d is good news on residuals; my old E60, after 4.5 years and 110000 miles was still worth 29% of what I paid for it. The dealer commented that if it had been petrol, it would have depreciated considerably more, and even against a 530d it had held more of its value.

I noticed you posted about fuel consumption on the 530d - the overall consumption on my 535d , after 2000 miles( probably about 1200 miles on motorway), shows 34.9 mpg.

Thanks, it seems like the 535d is the fave. I've also realised that the price difference isn't £5k anyway. In the 535d the auto box is standard but in the 535i you have to pay £1500 for it.

535d by a country mile. it will be faster and feel more responsive at legal and sane speeds thanks to its tractorful of torque.

535dA all the way, but already the 530dA is more than enough.

I am an M3 E90 owner and NO 535D gets near me, however I have ordered the 550i M Sport, and only doing 8K miles I suggest you try one, it will blow you away compared to the others.

After running 530d for the past 4 years I would recommend petrol over diesel for that kind of millage.
