Hi PoleApart,

I think BMW have improved the sound of their diesels a lot in recent years. My E39 530d was ok. Good for a diesel I guess. My E61 530d sounds great. Different to a petrol six for sure, but more bassy (and characterful?). Anyhow, for me, it's good enough to actually want to listen to the engine when accelerating and I used to be a petrol head. Maybe I've got defective hearing in my old age?

Having said all that, of course I would go back to my petrol (V8) if money (and the environment) were not an issue.

I guess we'll have an interesting comparison of impressions - you going from E60 525i to F10 520d and myself from E60 530d to F10 523i.

You have a similar spec too. I went for the variable rate dampers and standard 17 in wheels, oyster leather with black but didn't upgrade the sound or get the DEFA heating. The rest is like yours.

That's a pretty early date for a 520d. You'll be one of the first I guess. Mine is week 20 production.

I'm curious on your wheel choice. I have huge tramlining issues with summer 245s on the crap roads we have here and the ruts that come from overloaded trucks. I have 225 winter tyres and it's like a different car - just amazing what 2cms less of width does. The higher profile in the F10 should also help and I understand that the new RFTs are better than the old ones. My OEM tyres were the last RFT's that I had on my car.

My E60 530d, the old 218 hp version, sounds like crap when cold and just plain rough when warm. I can always feel a delicate vibration through the steering wheel at idle. My father has a W211 E320 CDI and my colleague an A6 3.0TDI and these engines sound much better than the beemer. Their cars are nowehere near as fun to drive as the E60 though. Nothing beats this sound though (sorry about shaky camera action but that doesn't hurt the sound):

Actually I'm changing from a '08 LCI E60 520dA to a '10 F10 520dA.

My current 520dA is a much better car than my '04 or '05 E60 525iA's where.
The little diesel is a fantastic engine!
The sound of the knocking diesel engine can only be heard in speeds under 35 km/h.

As you know, I now have OEM 172 M wheels with front 245/35 19" and rear 275/30 19" tires in the summer.
They are non-RF and even more comfy that my 17" 225/55 winter RF's winter's!

I have almost no problems with tramlining with the 19"'s even if the roads are pretty rough after the winter over here.

A had 18" 245/40 RF's on my earlier E60's and they where bad tramliners.

That is why I must have non-RF's tires for my new car.

My E39 193hp sounds just like yours. Bag of nails when cold, bit rough when warm. Someone once wrote that it sounds like a petrol six from 20 years ago that's had a heavy night on the booze and cigarettes. The newer BM 235hp engine sounds much more refined and like the merc or Audi. Still a million miles away from your Ferrari video, but hey ho.

Look forward to hearing about your F10 when you get it.

Where are from 1st bmw?

Your dealer may know something we don't...

But according to the Swedish BMW F10 catlogue I read,
not auto-stop function the the 8-speed 520dA, yet.

Only for the 6 speed manual tranny.

I think BMW is working hard to get F10 520 d automatic with the start-stop for at least two reasons:
1. Be the first one in the market
2. To get lowest possible CO2 rating for the most selling version

The 8-speed box should be able to handle this (needs special support from auto box to do start-stop).
Thow in practice this start-stop works only summertime, an will have quite minimal effect on real CO2 emissions.
