My Ride: Awaiting a Saphire Black 520d SE, Black High-Gloss Trim, Black Fusion Upholstery, Hi-Fi Stereo, DAB Radio, USB/Ipod Adaptor. ETA Nov 21st 2007

Hi all,

I'm due to order the replacement for my 2007 520d by the end of May. I've been able to test drive a 530d only so far, which isn't very helpful - I'm looking for input and advice into choosing between a 520 and a 525d. I can just about stretch to a 525d automatic, and that is it - wouldn't be able to afford any additional options, whereas on a 520d, obviously I could. I don't have any flexibility on this as this is a company lease, not something I can influence with my own money.

Have always enjoyed by F60 520 - but my current car is manual, and I do need to move to an automatic.

What kind of difference does the 525d show over the 520, particularly on the F10 - anybody able to judge that yet? If not, what was the difference between the E60 versions like?

Thanks for any advice, much appreciated!

As you probably know, the technical difference between the F10 520d and F10 525d is basically:
4(2L) to 6(3L) cylinders, +50-100kg in extra weight on the 525 (depending), +20hp and +70 Nm in torque.
Slightly better overall performance of course.

As for handling and such the 520d is not avaliable until later on this summer (production start: june 2010) so we'll just have to wait and see

Hi morkjt,

The 525d pollutes more and is more expensive.

The 520d is well enough for the Nordic counties.
But if you driving all the time with four persons
and the trunk full of luggage, the 525d is a better
choice.

Even the F10 double exhaust pipes don't tell anyone
its a six in line or not.
(520d, 525d, 530d, 523i and 528i has the same pipes.)

535d FTW! But if that is not in your budget, go for more power - so the 525d wins.

The sound of 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder is different - I hate the sound of the current 2.0d engine when being inside the car. noise insulation is said to be much better in F10, so hopefully it will not be an issue anymore

If you want more power, get a tuning box!

To mooney058 ,

I hope so, too.

But the F10 weighs some +100 kg more than the E60,
so I a much better sound isolation is to be expected.

The fact is, that in the 520d LCI E60 the engine noice
can only be heard under the speed of some 40 km/h or
at full throttle.

A 6 is a 6 and a 4 is a 4. This cannot be compensated with a tuning box. I have tried a KCR box with my 120dM and it's powerful but not very harmonius. A 6 like my 525dT is a real joy to drive. That said, as the F11 does not come with a 525d option from the start, I have placed an order for a 520dT. So we'll see if I will like it or not. I am compensating with some extra options instead.

If you drive in the UK, the 520d has all the power you need at legal speeds with a full load.
It has excellent fuel economy and low emissions to keep you on the best side of the tax system over the next 2-4 years of ownership.

A de-tuned 3 liter engine in the 525d is an unnecessary extravagance in a country which penalises petrolheads.
I would get a 520d and with the £5,000 saved and get some more options:

+1.

...and in the rest of Europe (and the world) except Germany.
