Automotive News (via Autoblog) is reporting that ...

BMW may begin straying from its long held tradition of equipping its M models with rev-happy, naturally aspirated engines. According to a source speaking with Automotive News, the twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 currently equipped on the new X6, could be stroked out to 4.8-liters and fitted on future Ms, including the new M5, due out in 2011. The twin-turbo'd 3.0-liter inline six found in the 335i, 535i and entry-level X6 proved that BMW has the chops to create highly efficient and eminently entertaining blown mills, and there's no doubt that significant tweaks to the turbocharged V8 could boost power levels over the stock mill's claimed 407 hp, to take take serious aim at Audi's 572 hp RS6.

This will certainly be a more torque-fun engine than the current high-rev M engines ... and probably more appealing to a broader segment of automotive enthusiasts.

Sad news for the NA M-power days.

I have a feeling since Audi already has the twin-turbo V10 RS6, BMW has to be different. So they will use a TTV8.

Whether it sucks or not, is of personal opinion, but what you say about the 'M' tradition is mostly right.

With the exception of the race version of the M1, no official M road car was or has been turbocharged.

However, when the BMW Motorsports Division was established and released its first official car, the celebrated 3.0 CSL (adoringly called the BATMOBILE) in 1973, there was another car released at the same time that had Motorsport engineering and wore the Motorsport colors... but not the badge.

It was the 2002 turbo!

I know that the 2002 turbo is not an official M car, but it did wear the colors and it did have input from the Motorsport Division of our beloved BMW.

Just some trivia information for those of you interested.
