2010 f10 525d n57 engine lost power and cut out
Hi all
today the car was driving fine and then suddenly lost power and drivetrain warning popped up. I managed to park up and tried starting it up again but it will turn over but not actually fire. Battery is fine , as is alternator (only 2-3 months old) change the oil every 6k miles. I had timing chain replaced 30k miles ago and gear box oil replaced last year.
I know it's not timing chain ... well I dont THINK it is as its was not making any related noises. Called out recovery who took it to my garage but difficulty moving the car as the electronic brakes cannot be released because car cant be put in neutral and so they had to jack car up and put skates under the wheels so car could be pushed into position.
ANYWAY I and recovery crew suspect the problem to be high pressure fuel pump.
car is in garage so I cant read the codes (have a BMW code reader but it was at home). Garage wont be able to deal with it until the new year.
any suggestions or ideas would be much appreciated.
thanks

It doesn't make since that the car has to be in neutral to release the brakes. The car only needs to be in the on position for them to work. Your issue can be anything. Without the codes it's just a guess of any 100 possibilities

I'll just have to wait until the new year. The engine is turning over but is just not firing. So probably is fuel pump and/or fuel filter because that hasn't been changed in a while. Anyway I'll just have to wait until the garage can have a look. 👍

I wish I could. I dont have the expertise or ability to fix it myself 🤣 oil and filter change is all I can manage these days (illness) but the garage are actually very good and have been very fair with me over the past few years. 👍👍

Just had the garage phone me. Bad news. If the high pressure fuel pump fails then apparantly the injectors are compromised and it's a big job about £3-4k.
I've had a couple of opinions off different mechanics.

What that's crazy. The only thing that's needed are the pumps. Thai is a common failure. You can replace them on your own with little knowledge and tools.

but after asking around various garages and various forums I seemed to be getting the answer of having to get the injectors changed too! As I'm planning on keeping the car for a while longer I didnt want to risk anything so I bit the bullet and sourced some re-manufactured bosch injectors from germany. After I had my timing chain breaking on me I thought that was as bad as it will get... boy was I wrong!
