If you price out a 2011 BMW 550i xDrive ... and check all the optional boxes (including the super-hot looking 20" cross-spoke Ferric Gray wheels) ... the list price hits $94.750. Yeow. I had no idea.

On the other hand, a 2011 550i configured like my 2006 550i (sport, cold weather, HUD, SAT) hits $70,700, which is exactly the same list price as 5 years ago. That seems like a pretty good deal for a car that has in most ways gotten much better.

I'd get a Porsche 911 anyday over a 550 loaded for that price.

Terrible comparison. Two totally different cars for two totally different markets. Besides a 911 can't seat 4/5 people.

There are lots of vehicles to choose from in the $70K-$100K range....it all depends on what you want/need.

You can't even get a stripped-down Panamera for even close to $70K. The cheapest Panamera starts at $74.4K.....for that you get a 300hp V6 which makes the car way too slow (0-60 in 6 sec) and very un-Porsche-like.

I suspect you've never driven a Panamera... Even the base model is a good driver's car. If you can handle the price of entry, BMW has nothing than can compete with the Panamera Turbo.

I did test-drive a Panamera--a V6 and a S model....I wasn't impressed (esp. the base model). The base model felt very heavy and under-powered.....not to mention ridiculously over-priced for what you get. The S model was much better but the performance to me wasn't any better than my 550i.....besides, it was $25K more than my 550i. Also, I hated that rear....absolutely the worst rear-end on a car I've ever seen!

I think the next-gen M5 might give the Panamera Turbo a run for its money. (for even less money!)

In any case, why spend $120K+ on a Turbo?....for $50K+ less, I'd get a CTS-V, GT-R, or a M3 and call it a day.

Says the guy driving the heaviest five series BMW has ever made...

The S is quicker than the 550, and is a much better car. It weighs about 400 lbs less than the 550... And why spend 120K (actually most probably more) on a Turbo? Because a) some of us can, and b) because it's a great car.

As for bench racing cars that have yet to be released, that's a game best left for pre-pubescent adolescents.
