Sometimes I don't get you Euro/UK guys. You have paid for nearly every option under the sun but still gone for the baby engine. How come? The 530i gets you way more power on the same fuel economy.

In some countrys the tax is also connected to cc. I can also imagine that the gas price is hard to deal with for some of us. For me the gas price was the key to get a diesel this time.

Its all about the cost of running the vehicle.
Big engine = big cost - think about:
Fuel cost = US$ 5+ per gallon
Add tax payable by company car drivers for private fuel purchased at approx ?3,500 per annum.
Then calculate the difference between a 2 litre diesel with a CO2 emmission of 170 compared with a 4 litre petrol with a CO2 emmission of 235 when the cost to you in tax is calculated as:
15% of the cost of the retail cost of the car +3% for every 5gms over the 160 threshold where the car costs
say ?20,000 this runs out at
170gms of CO2 = ?20,000 x 15% = ?3,000 + 170-160=10/5=2x3%=6% = ?1,200 so total = ?4,200 pa
The bigger engined car with emmission at 235 runs out at
235gms of CO2 = ?20,000 x 15% = ?3,000 = 235-160=75/5=15x3%=45% = ?9,000 so total ?12,000 pa
Then factor in that the retail price of the car with the bigger engine is more expensive anyway and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out that the cost of the additional tax, plus the additional Vehicle Excise Duty, plus the routine additional cost of fuel adds up to a BIG difference in average running cost.
It's this system that encourages us in UK (can't comnment on other parts of EU) to buy a fully loaded car with a weedy little engine - The BMW 5-Series "lawn-mower" variant would sell like hot cakes to company car drivers here...!
Happy Easter
Andy
PS _ I should have mentioned that the CO2 escalator threshold drops by 5gms every April and so the cost to the driver increases disproportionately each year, unless they too reduce their emmissions on a regular basis.
