Hi, just took delivery of my new E61 yesterday and I must say that I'm bery unimpressed by the quality of the stereo; it just sounds too flimsy!

Does anyone have any experience of upgrading their stereo system? Do I need to look just at the speakers or is the actual stereo itself crap too?

Without diving in to details, I would recommend to start with the speakers.

Ok, thanks for the tip. Had I had the time to wait for a factory build rather than taking a factory stock vehicle I think I would have specifiend the premium sound option; what is the difference between the standard system and 'premium sound'? Is it just the speakers or more?

you get addional speakers - 2 subs under the seats and better aplification to speakers with the hifi option. well worth this option!

I did - spent ?3000 on new amp and speakers plus sub woofer. not that impressed to be honest having done same with my 330ci which was much much better, and I think the difference is that with the E60 I didn't (or couldn't) replace the header unit as it's integral, whereas with the 330 I was able to replace that too. So it seems that the header unit puts a ceiling on what you can really do. Also - having the rear speakers too close together in the touring roof I also suspect is a disadvantage.
