Talking to my missus the other day and she's coming round to the idea of getting a little more power for our 530d.

I've heard that DMS are good, but quite expensive, and I think I've heard someone talking about emaps as pretty decent.

Just wondered if anyone had done it.

And if so, could you answer the following:

How much did it cost?

How do you find the car now?

Was yours Auto or Manual?

Any problems with warranty and/or servicing?

How's the fuel economy after the chip compared to before?

Anything else you'd like to add?

Many thanks in advance...

Hey Kell,

I have thought about this too, and heard about DMS. I drive an '06 E61 520D auto. This puts out 163bhp with 340nM of torque

When I phoned them they said that the tuning would deliver 208bhp with 406nM of torque, and would also improve the fuel consumption by 5 - 6 % in town and 10% on long runs! The other good news is that the guys says that it doesn't affect warrenty as it is "virtually undetectable by BMW". ????

If you can't take your car to them in Southampton, then they can send out a technician to you at no extra charge. the price he gave me for my car is ?495 (inc VAT).

If you haven't had a look already, here is a link to their website - http://www.dmsautomotive.com/.

The hardest part of this whole process would be convincing the missus!

Good luck, and keep us posted.

Cheers J

Hi Perhaps try for example the Abrieb tuning device first? can be found on E-bay for approx ?70-?80
You'll immediately notice the difference and according to them (see my other threats) it only influences the fuel injection (so more fuel earlier etc but it doesn't go outside the standard safety margins).
The only reason I had for still doing a full remap was because I wanted more to torque below 1500 rpm. however they (I think DMS) confirmed that the lack of torque wouldn't really be resolved. Maybe improve it a bit. So therefore at the moment I've decide to keep with this cheaper solution which so far works great (have it for almost a year now).

Good luck anyway (feel free to try mine however not sure if my device would work on yours as mine is a 525d)

Someone's also added 'Chipped UK' to the mix.

Trying to get prices for all and some answers to things like the lack of low-down torque.

This probably won't happen until March/APril as it will depend on whether or not my missus gets her bonus this financial year...

Not sure how likely that is in the current climate.

I too have been looking around for who to go with for a remap. The car's an October 2008 E61 520D Manual, with the new 177bhp "efficient dynamics" engine.

I've read quite a few good things about DMS, and Evolve seem highly rated too. For my car their website table (here) claims their remap gets 216BHP.

Will be following this thread to see who else to look at and who to avoid............

Did remap my 530xd 2006 231hp at evolve in Luton. Check EVOLVE
Gain is between 40 to 50hp and suspect car now around 275~280hp (I did not had time for Dyno check as in hurry due to work issue unfortunately...). Car is so much better after than before. No comparison. Cost was 495GBP. Fuel consumption improved 12% after remap on 'normal' driving. Don't know yet on heavy right foot conditions..

Thanks for all the comments so far.

As it is, emaps and chipped UK have come in at ?340 and ?380 respectively. Not heard back from DMS yet.

However, it may be on the back burner now as:

1: Someone hit the back of the car (no note) and the bumper needs respraying
2: I hit a pothole and ruined a runflat AND buckled an alloy
3: I just got hit with a speeding ticket

Me too, new back tyre in December due to a faulty tyre, hit a badger in January which cost me ?300 excess on insurance then 2 new tyres due to puncture (one of then was the tyre I had on in December) and I need a service in a 1000 miles...

When I do get mine re-maped I'm going for a Superchips bluefin which allows you to turn the re-map on or off and check for fault codes, cost is ?435inc VAT. They quote a 44bhp increase for my 177bhp diesel.

there are so meny companys doing this now, and for me the proof is in the pudding so to speak.

jason of B & W fame in west houndslow london (b&w chip tune)
is a BMW technition (not just a chip or tuning guy)
he races his own X5 at santa pod with fantastic quarter mile times with just his tuning skills (speaks for itself)
he provides both generic and custom tunes, with the ECU taken out and not just "flashed" with new info.

very nice guy very helpfull, and does all repair work also.

did my car and its balistic..i have a porsche boxster s (3.2) also, and the diesel leaves it for dead.

he gets my vote (and he is very cheap, see adds in all the big BMW mags (performance BMW etc)
