Yep. My mechanic even told me that he has replaced more than a dozen of the hoses. They all knew about the hose re-design as well.

In the past, the entire unit would be replaced when the car was still under warranty.

That said, it sucks for those of us out of warranty and with destroyed compressors.

Jokingly, I mentioned that probably I am looking at having to replace the wiring harness to the rear door (as mentioned in other threads here). Mechanic simply smiled and said, "Yes."

hello all.

Why does the hose go bad so quickly??? Is this caused by the debris picked up on the road?

For me, the whole air supply has gone bad in march (2 months ago! at 36K miles) and BMW replaced the thing.


Now I have to start worrying about the hose...

Is this a design flaw, and therefore shouldn't there be an SIB for this???


This sounds more and more annoying --- $60K car has a frequently failing $10 hose that has major impact on the car's suspension system?!

My guess is that you already have to improved hose if they just replaced everything else in March.

The problem for the hose can be attributed to road debris getting inside the cover for the compressor, and also in some cases, temperature fluctuations, moisture and so on. The hose goes bad and then the compressor sucks in dust, sand and grime, which then messes up some valves in the compressor. The compressor over-heats and eventually fails causing problems in getting the rear suspension up or down.

Removing the cover to see the compressor and hose takes about 3 minutes, so having checked out on a regular basis cannot hurt.

Just had a look at mine - and guess what, mines gone as well. I have shortened the pipe by 2 cm, and refitted with a new clip. The rest of the pipe looked okay, it was just split on the join to the compressor, I am hoping therefore that it should be okay.

I don't know if it would be safer to have the whole pipe replaced or not. I see mention in this thread of a redesigned pipe, is this reinforced or just plain rubber like the current one?

Does anyone have the part number for the redesigned pipe?

The only part number that I can find on; BMW Info Fans is 37206777361 which is priced at ?71.51. A lot cheaper than a new pump.

My car is just out of warranty (1 month), so I would no doubt need to sort this myself.

Anyone knows when that improved hose is put in the car from the factory on?
Mine is from 11/2006.
Is it possible to have a look at it without having it in the air?

I didn't ask about this, but according to narvselius, it changed last year.

IMHO, it would be rather difficult to just get under your car, remove the cover and then look up there. It needs to be up.

I would suggest that you also ask to be there when they open the cover so that you can see what is up there.

They should give it a close-up inspection (with a light) and have a look at everything.

Thank you Patrick. This looks to me like a design flaw with the compressor cover, and the overall design of that portion of the car!
