Mine was acting up in a similar way some time ago (because I took it off to paint it, so it was my fault). Turns out I had damaged the wires and it was shorting...I can see where something similar might happen on its own. I found a replacement one on eBay for ~$35, easy to get it replaced.

Sounds encouraging, but I'm not quite clear. Just what did you remove and then damage/replace for $35? Doesn't sound like the wiring harness, so was it the external button in glass, the latch "receptacle" in trim under window, or the solenoid? Other?
