Tailgate electrial issues.
Ok, so randomly to glass tailgate would open when starting the car, this was annoying but i got used to it.
Today the glass section opened and would not shut, after 20 attempts and a really hard slam it shut. Fast forward a few hours to tonight, it now appears that the glass section will not open - the rear wiper and sprayer dont work, and the boot interior lights are now on, even with the car locked... Whats going on?! |
The wires going to your tailgate are breaking and shorting out. This is exceptionally common on E61s. Symptoms are lights out, poor radio reception, trunk or glass randomly opening, no rear defrost, etc. SenCom makes a new wiring harness but is a bit pricey. I have awful radio reception and bad keyless entry so I’m troubleshooting to see if it is my antenna amplifier since the wire loom looks fine. |
What has helped me when I have this issue intermittently is a can of WD40. I spray it in the locking mechanism attached to the tailgate and down in the recessed area where it attaches towards the bumper. I open and close it 5-10 times and it works again. Allows me to lock my car, no random panic alarms, no random interior lights when driving or the rear cargo cover popping up while driving.

I have just repaired mine this past weekend. Given the fact that your glass does not open its going to be a bitch to get the trim off. there is a video out there that that shows you how to pop the glass with the trim partially off. Thats the hardest part.
