Occasionally on unlocking, a ticking noise is heard coming from the Sat NAV DVD / CD Player. It is very occasional and only seems to start on wake up. Rightly or wrongly, it is temporarily cured by fist thump at one side (not so severe as to cause damage). Sytners say it is not justifiable to replace it for - wait for it! ?800.00. The noise is not to be confused with the sound of the DVD optics searching or updating from the DVD.

It still works OK so until it stops, will leave alone. Anyone else with this?

Also, if you procure one of those non BMW Sat NAV DVD's for less than ?25.00 you may get updated mapping but claimed speed cameras and larger post code directory won't work unless the car has a software update. BMW are not interested in doing this unless you buy their DVD - around, I recall, ?250.00 including the software update which can take many hours.

I've had my Oct 04 build E61 for 25 months and the DVD drive has been replaced twice and I think the original owner had it replaced once as well. First time it occasionally made a sound like a woodpecker was trying to get out and second time it would seek endlessly and sometimes say no DVD was present. Keep an eye on it and be insistent if your warranty is coming to an end.

Have you tried one of the disks with the postcode/speed camera function? Not sure why a SW upgrade is required - it's just more "information" on the disc.

Hi Phelix. Unfortunately there is no warranty left on my 2005 model. It still works OK so I won't do anything until it dies.

The non BMW Sat Nav DVD I have is a 2009-2 Pro Europe DVD which claims includes full 7 Digit Postcode Input Option and all UK & European Speed + Red-Light Camera POIs. When first inserted, the IDrive screen said wait a while while there was an update but it didn't perform the extra options. The DVD does say the car system software must be from March 2005. Mine was registered 1st March 2005 so it must have missed it.
