From this topic on a German forum it bacame obvious that tons of people have discovered rust bubbles on their tailgate, just below the two lower corners of the glass window. What happens is the plastic panels on both sides of the glass window opening rub the metal beneath them and destroy the paint, allowing water to get to the metal and cause rust.
And this even on cars just 2 or 3 years old

Just checked my car, and sure enough - I do have rust on the passenger side corner :thumbsdown:

As far as I understand BMW has rust warranty of 6 or 8 years and has repaired or replaced all trunk doors in question. Will be visiting with my dealer..

I noticed some small rust bubbles in this location shortly after buying my 07 530xiT last December. When I asked my local dealer, they commented that the area appeared to have been repainted (I'm not sure I agree) and the rust is probably the result of an inferior paint job. Now that I've found that I'm by far the only one with this issue, and that BMW is obviously aware of the issue, I've asked the dealer to re-assess the problem. Will post my results here...

Bumping this old thread up. My E61 has the problem--right side just below the glass--and it seems like MOST of the ones I've seen here in the northeast US have it too. Anyone made a corrosion warranty claim?
