Default Rear speakers in surround mode (Individual Audio)

Tonight I took apart the rear speakers above the luggage compartment to see why they weren't working. Turns out they do work. Oddly enough, when I have surround mode on and the fader in the middle, nothing comes out of the rear speakers. If I switch to stereo mode they work fine, or if I push the fader two notches to the rear they start to make noise. 1 notch to the rear and they're still off. Anyone else with the Individual Audio package notice this? It seems a bit odd to me. I know the Individual Audio "sets the sound stage" towards the front but still figured something would come from the very rear.

In surround, the rear channels will carry only the sound that might be in the rear of a hall (depending on the setting for hall is), which is mostly reverberation sounds and at a much lower volume. I am sure that even if you have the fader in the middle you will hear sound from the rear if you bring the total volume up, depending on the source material, of course.
