Hi,
just wanted to know from you diesel drivers if and how you notice that the particle filter is cleaning itself?

Especially you who are driving the 520d but all are welcome to chime in.

Recently spoke to a couple of colleagues who drive Volvo and they claim that their cars lose engine power and act erratically during the cleaning process, for quite long periods during driving.

Sounds unacceptable to me.

Car just shifts at higher shift points (steptronic). That's it. And you can feel that the actual shift is a bit more sudden or so it seems. Also i noticed that exactly in that period the exhaust heats itself like alot. Like you've been racing the car for a big period even though you drove it normaly.

The particle filter is new tech.

It should clean itself but I also doubt it.

The 520dT is a smart choice!

Not an automatic???

It cleans itself by heating up the accumulated "dirt". This heating is made by recycling exhaust (me thinks). This recycling causes the engine to studder on some lesser brands....obviously not on the BMW since I did not hear anyone having problems with particle filters.

And yes, the car I have ordered has automatic steptronic. My god how much I want it right now.

AND WHAT A HEAT...
Once i drove home aprox 10-15km and i drove normally since traffic was quite heavy. Usual shifts letting D mode use XE. I realised that shifting didn't occur at 1500-1600rpm as usual but around 2000+rpm. Hmmm it seemed to me like it was in E rather in XE. I then reached home, got out to open the garage, and heared the exhaust ticking and clanking like i've just raced my car on a racetrack. I forgot about the particle filter and i didn't know at that time the very high temperatures it worked. Outside were 10 degrees Celsius and i said what? Where does this come from, and i did the stupid mistake to touch the tailpipes to feel the temperature....AOUCH i got a bad burn (ON THE TAILPIPES) that kept for 3 days. That's how hot they were...the exhaust underneath must have been near red.

Three or four times since I bought the car (5000km) have I notice a very low frequency noise from the exhaust system, like someone put a sportmuffler on it. I even call my dealer an told him something must be wrong . First time I stopped the car and went back listening and the exhaustpipe was very hot and ticking like I have raced at top speed for a long time.

i notice a cool mettalic sound from the exhaust when it cleans the particle filter. And don't forget one thing after 200.000 kms you have to buy a new one that costs around 1.200 ?....
