My Ride: 2007 530Xi - Navigation, Premium package, Steptronic.
In a comparison between the BMW X6 SAC and the 2009 Infiniti FX50, NY Times writer Ezra Dyer said today that while the X6 is OK, and expensive, BMW buyers should buy an E61 535xi instead. Here's the quotation at the end of the article:
"But other BMW buyers are even more radical than the X6 customer, trendsetters who know they can walk right past that X6 in the showroom and drive away in an even cooler, more futuristic vehicle. One that?s almost a second faster to 60 m.p.h., gets 3 more m.p.g., weighs 800 pounds less and carries more people and cargo. It?s called the 535xi Sports Wagon. It is a station wagon, pure and simple, and it?s the real step forward in the crossover evolution."
So much for novelty, eh?

Although mine isn't a 535xi, it's still a E61 - The coolest and most futuristic vehicle! Yeah!

I think the writer got it spot on. I think the E61 is close to the perfect family car, but I struggle with the thinking behind the X6.

I did an ED of the 2008 535xiT SW last may 2007 and over the last year, I have never enjoyed a car so much, except for my 1990 Lexus LS400 which I still own. I don't see the X6 appeal, except for this fabulous 300hp engine. The E61 is very popular in Europe, and perhaps we will start to see the light here in the US.

I can see the appeal of the X5, but its a lot more expensive and you have to compromise on handling/driving experience compared to the 5er.
As for the X6, this is obviously BMWs attempt at bridging that gap, but IMHO they put the emphasis in the wrong areas -- I really don't see the value add over the current model range and its design is certainly not going to help me change my mind!
I wonder if BMW is deliberately limiting the E61 to the 535iX to protect its X5 and X6 sales? Or is it simply down to the fact that Touring (Station Wagons) are not popular in the US?
Maybe someone state side can shed some light on why Tourings are so unpopular in the US??

At some point folks in the USA might return to the glory days of station wagons (ie: sport wagons or touring). As gas prices continue their upward spiral I think it will come sooner than later. At this point the only American car maker that offers a wagon is Chrysler.
Bring back the woodies!!
