My Ride: 2005 535d Touring
Hi there,
In view of the latest instable weather situation I have decided to mount some winter tires. I currently have 172 rims installed - 8.5J all around. Conti-Sport Contact 3s 245/35s are currently mounted. These tires are like F1 slicks on slush, ice, and snow.
While I was in Finland some years ago, I was really impressed with the Nokian Hakka studded tires - really impressive! Studded tires, however, in Luxembourg/Belgium, where I usually drive, are a no-go. I have been, consequentially, looking at the Nokian WRG2 product to fit on my rim set-up. To this purpose, I would appreciate any input users of this tire could provide me for winter conditions. My questions are the following:
- How do you rate this tire for all-around winter user (mainly highway and smaller-roads with slush, snow, and/or a small amount of ice)?
- Which tire size would be best for the 172 rim (8.5x19) - Nokia produces this tires for 19" rims: 235/35R19 91V XL and a 255/40R19 100V XL?
As always, thanks for your valuable input.
Alex

Hi, I just got these tires yesterday and gotta test them a bit hard before I can conclude anything. So far, they have been good on thin snow, slush, icy road. However, my size is 17" 225x50

Alex, I think the tyre as such is perfectly fine, but I believe 19" is a bit on the wild side for a winter tyre. You need tyres that are not that wide, and for that I recommend 17" as the best combination between grip, look and comfort.
I'm currently on 18" 135M with Goodyear non-studded but that's because I got them when I bought the car and thought I just as well could use them for the winter tyres. But if I bought a new set-up I would revert to 17".
