Default new (to me) e61 M-Sport

Hello everyone. I am excited as I will be going to pick up our new 2010 e61 M-Sport Touring tomorrow! Here's a few pics from the dealer:

This will be my first e60/e61, but not first BMW. My wife's current grocery getter (until tomorrow anyway) is a 2000 e39 528iT with sport package. I got my daughter a 1998 Z3 1.9l 5-speed, and I have a 1985 e24 M635. We've really enjoyed the e39, but it's now at 16 years old and has ~210k miles on it. I do most of my own maintenance, and the e39 still runs good so I'll take it over for now so that the wife doesn't need to worry about any little odd noises. We looked at a few different options, but in the end she wanted another wagon so I started looking at the e61. I fairly quickly decided I wanted the M-Sport package and then figured out that M-Sport and wagon were not an easy combo to find (in the USA anyway). After a while of searching this one popped up and even turned out to not be that far from me so I went to check it out and jumped on it after a test drive and review of the records.

It's got ~98k miles on it, but within the last year it has had new tires and new brakes installed. A couple of new coils and plugs, and the big one is 2 new turbos replaced under warranty. There's been some other things done as well, but I think those are the bigger ones. I haven't seen anything regarding cleaning of the intake valves so I am assuming that will need to be done in the non-too distant future. The electric water pump and HPFP are on my radar as well.

I am really pumped to get to know the car better! Looking forward to asking questions and hopefully contributing as well.

Take care,

Eric

Congrats and welcome to the forums! That's a nice looking wagon. Staying stock or thinking of mods?

Yellowjacket,

Thanks for the welcome. As this is the wife's daily driver I don't have any big changes in store. Besides the M635 is my fun money pit. Having said that I am looking at the JB4. A buddy of mine has one in his 335 and loves it. I like the fact I can set it to stock mode while my wife is driving and switch over to fun mode when I am in the pilot's seat. I'm sure other detail things will catch my attention as time goes on. Do you have a link to a thread or website detailing your car? I'd like to better understand what all mods you have done. Oh, I assume you graduated from GA Tech? My daughter is at Clemson now, sorry, don't hold it against me.

Kyle,

Here's a few pics of the stable. I need to get a group shot some time.

Luckily living close to the BMW NA manufacturing plant allows our local BMWCCA chapter to jump on the test track a few times a year.

Getting ready to head out in a few hours (son has a basketball game). I can't wait! Luckily another buddy of mine with a 135 offered to drive me up to get the car so that'll be fun.

Take care,

Eric

You have quite the stable there! Yes, I went to GT, and I actually lived in Greenville for a little while and had a good friend who worked at the BMW plant in Spartanburg. What a great opportunity to use the BMW test track!

I don't have a dedicated thread on my mods, but many are the same or similar to Evan's (ucsbwsr) and he keeps a very detailed thread at:

https://5series.net/forums/e61-touri...ve-all-135223/

And I can definitely confirm the JB4 is a good tool for the money. The n54 is a great power plant, and the JB4 turns it into a beast.

I still can't get over how good your wagon looks. I love that color and the interior combination is great, especially with the anthracite M-sport headliner. The 2010 M-sports were hard to find, so congrats again!

Thanks Yellowjacket. I appreciate the kind words.

Well, I now have an e61 at home! Here's a pic of the car at the dealership just before we loaded up to bring her home. My son went with me and got all pumped over the dash Nav system, extra large sun roof and rear cupholders.

The drive home was great. Took about an hour and a half and the car felt about perfect. Power was good, no strange noises, couldn't have asked for more. Had I kept it in the 70~80 range the mpg readout was showing ~27mpg. Since I pushed it a bit a few times I ended up at 25mpg when I got home.

Unfortunately, by the time we got home the sun was almost down so my wife could see too much details of the exterior, but we loaded her up and went to grab some supper and showed her a little around the interior.

So far so good.

Looking through my documentation later this evening I have found a few more items I missed that had been taken care of like 3 new fuel injectors so I am still happy with what I have seen of the previous owner's upkeep of the car.

I do have a question though, my official owner's manual appears to be for a 2008 model e6X, is that correct? Did BMW not print an updated version for 2010? The iDrive and nav info is for the older style and therefore not really helping me much. If there is a 2010 version of the owner' manual, does someone know where I can download a copy from the web?

Also, with the car I received 2 sets of Nav DVDs, but I don't have a DVD player in the car (that I am aware of). Do I actually need these, or can I use them, or are these for the earlier style Nav system? The only slot I see on my dash is for what I assume is a CD player.

One other thing the previous owner installed on the car was a P3Cars vent gauge which shows multiple readouts: Boost, Coolant Temp, Air Intake Temp, Ignition Timing, Voltmeter, even 0-60mph, along with some more readings that I don't know what I'd do with. It's also supposed to act as a code reader and clearer, but I haven't tried that yet to confirm. Supposed to be able to do something else and it'd read AFR. It's a nice guage that sits to the left of the steering wheel and is colored to match the other dash colors (orange). Looking forward to playing with that more as well.

All in all, I am still very much satisfied with the purchase. Looking forward to playing with it some more in the daylight tomorrow.

Take care,

Eric

Eric,

I'm glad to hear the experience has been good so far and that the owner apparently took good care of your car.

It sounds like your dealer (or one along the way) may have just found what they thought was the right manual/DVD pack for the car. I cannot see where my manual differentiates between model years, but it does have a 2009 copyright/print date (mine was a 07/2009 build). It covers e6x, but it has the appropriate information for the CIC iDrive in the 2010. Fortunately, the CIC iDrive is much more intuitive, so it won't be too bad to navigate on your own.

And with the CIC iDrive, I am not aware of the need for the nav DVDs. Our system is entirely hard-drive based, so you have all the nav data on a hard drive in the car. As a side benefit, you can also store music on the hard drive.

Additionally, your CD slot doubles as a DVD player. By default, it will only play DVDs when the car is stopped with the parking break on, but that can be fixed with some coding

Robert

Very nice car and color, congratulations and welcome to the forum!

For quick coding from your phone look at Carly for BMW. Before you settle for JB4, look at MHD Flasher, I have that and couldn't be happier, less of a hassle to install and remove for those trips to the dealer...and you can quickly swap from one map to another to stock, not as fast as JB4 but 2 minutes wait is not terribly bad..

That is cool. As rare as these things seem to be with the M-Sport package, I'm not totally surprised. By chance I noticed that the ad for the car I purchased was only on the market for 5 days by the time I put my deposit down, I must have contacted the guy the day he posted it or the next day. I went to test drive it and look it over last Thurs. (Feb. 4th). After doing so, I left a deposit while I went back to get things squared away on financing. After I put my deposit down, the seller mentioned that he had been talking with at least one other guy. I wasn't sure if that was a sales tactic or not, but I wouldn't have been surprised. Just glad I jumped on it.

I drove her into work today and met up with a buddy for lunch and gave him a ride. He just kept smiling and laughing and couldn't get over the condition of the car. Little by little figuring out the details on this thing. I noticed the lights turning as I turned the steering wheel before the sun came up. I also noticed that if you touch the preset buttons, but don't push them in, they will tell you which station the preset is currently set for. I was also able to figure out which version of the nav. maps I have ('09).

Anyway, still enjoying it!

Thanks all for the kinds words.

Eric
