My Ride: BMW E61, Nov-2005. M-steering wheel +sport seats. Panoramic roof, Lighting package, Xenon, Adaptive headlights, Prof. navigation, CD changer, Voice control, Bluetooth, Heated seats, 128 alloys -18 inch, B&W Tuning (hounslow)

All,

I've been looking at several great pictures on this forum of E61's with M6 style (167) 19" alloys.
I've looked at Ebay as well to understand what the average price would be for change to the M6 type including tyres.

Now the first picture I've found on this site from an actual BMW 5 series with those tyres. Looks very good (at least I think so)

The second one show the wheels available via Ebay.

Now it might be me but I feel that the Ebay wheels are less deep? What I like about the M6 alloys is that they curve to the inside of the tyre while going to the centre of the wheel. It would be a bit disappointing if I'd buy the ones on Ebay to only realise that they don't look the same.

Has anyone actually noticed this difference when actually purchasing these types of Alloys or is it just the perception of the pictures?
Also When you changed from standard 18" to 19" did the car drive a lot different/less comfortable?

Thanks for any comments or suggestions

The only thing I can tell you is the aftermarket rims tend to be cast and not forged like the oem; The cheaper price is tempting but I passed on the ones I checked out...
18-19 is going to give a harder ride, but not horrible.
hope that helps.

my tip is, stay away from replicas (mostly found on ebay) and stick with OEM rims.

The difference you are seeing is due to the offset of the wheels. 3 series and all wheel drive 5 series have offsets of at least 35, which indeed makes it not look like the deep dish true M6 wheel that has an offset of 12 to 18.

You can put 3mm spacers at the rear because your E61 looks like a 4x4. If you lower it won't even fit. Check by this pic of mine:

Wow rsyed that touring looks perfect. I have just had my new '08 E61 530d M Sport deivered and I'm very keen to get some M6 167 19" OEM wheels as you have. It's confusing me with all the 'off-set' spacers and the like and I don't know what I should be buying.

Could you (or anyone else for that matter) please tell me in simpleton terms, what and where do i buy some OEM 167's for my touring. The guy on Ebay is in the USA and if i get them from him at circa $2,000 I will have to pay VAT (UK sales Tax) @ 17.5%.

My main problem is to get some help on making sense of the off-set and spacer issues, I'm not really sure wat this means or which size/settings i need to buy.

Hope you can help,

Cheers

Hi mcdcherry,

just get OEM wheels from BMW that you can buy off ebay germany for about 1200 EUR. Take the standard offset that is available which is ET 12 for the front and ET 17 for the rear, mount standard e60 wheels on them (245/35/19 front and 275/30/19 rear) and then you are all set to go. This is a setup that will work on your car with NO rubbing whatsoever. Of course you can spice things up, like taking even lowered suspensions, or wider wheels, or spacers, but then you have to worry about rubbing issues.

So bottom line. If you are getting 19", then get them off ebay. Check out my e61 link below - i have the m5 166 wheels on in winter, and the m6 167 wheels in summer. in both cases you will need ET 12 front and et17 rear offsets. If you opt ot get 172 wheels that you typically find on the m-sport models of the UK cars, then you would be getting et32, but then you need 13 mm spacers in the rear, so a total of 26 mm spacers on the rear axle, otherwise they will be rubbing..

just post the ebay link on the forum and someone experienced will double check if replica or not...

cheers
