I have a September 2005 build Touring M Sport.

I have observed that whether the luggage compartment cover lifts when the tailgate is opened appears to be a random event.

Should the luggage compartment cover lift every time the tailgate is opened - and by whatever means, be it the button in the driver's footwell, the button on the remote control or the button on the tailgate itself?

Regardless of how you open the tailgate, the cover should lift. Personally, I'd rather have to lift it manually. Half the time, I forget to retract it and then I can't see out the back window. I find it somewhat awkward.

I had my covers and roller modified due to this reason. It came up randomly.

I have also seen that there seems to be a option of motorized roller on MY07.

If I remember correctly from your previous posts, you have the electric opening tailgate - this means automatic roller open/close as well. Us lesser mortals with manual opening have to close the load cover as well! (and regularly forget)

BTW - on my April '05 E61 it opens whenever the tailgate or the window is opened; I don't yet have the footwell button. So, it sounds like the OP's cover may be faulty

I have the electric lid, but I have to close the roller manually. I have a MY06 so I'm wondering if I can convince my self to get the roller modified...

Mine used to go up when it felt like it. Had it replaced by the dealer with a new type which had little roller bearings on the spigots which run up the tracks each side. Worked perfectly after that.

Well, its really convenient. But I wish the boot floor was a little bit deeper/lower; all that wasted space below, no spare etc. Would make it easier to fit luggage and trolley under the cover. Now the cover stays at home on longer journeys.

Yes, the cover should lift/open automatically with the opening of either tailgate glass or complete hatch. Ours would only release on one side. The release on the other side had a pinched/broken wire that happened during assembly.
