Does anyone know how long the fault codes stay in the system, as if this is an intermitant fault - how long have you got to get to the dealer for them to read the computer?

Just wondering, in case this ever happens to me.....
Your codes are logged until cleared by the dealer when hooked up to their computer equipment. The pump is the main problem with this fault. Many people just restart their cars and the message goes but the fault is logged in the cars computer.
Just a quick note to add that was mentioned by BMW following repair of the car yesterday. You can turn the car on and off to clear the message but your car will not be level. It will slightly lean to the left, thats higher at the right (looking from the back) than the left. If you can find an indepentent BMW repair garage then the chances are they will repair your pump and not replace. This is because where the pipe leaks air,it is attached to the pump, the hose is an intrical part of the pump, but the leak can be stopped with a repair. The pump is ?650 here in the UK and the full unit is requried if replaced due to a little leak on one of the attached air hose.

I have a 530D SE Touring and first experienced the warning light in August after a 250 mile early morning blast to the south coast. After turning the engine off and consulting with the manual, I rang a local specialist in Sheffield who said it was a common fault and that restarting would see it disappear - they were correct. However, over seveal thousand miles through to November, it started to appear with greater frequency and whilst a simple re-start gets rid of it, it greats hugely annoying. I did not want to spend circa ?1k at the dealers having it fixed as I am planning to p/x the car after Xmas for a 535d Sport Touring so used an internet parts specialist who kindly sent me two suppliers (independent breakers) details which I rushed to secure at ?125+vat for one that was taken off a a 2008 model. Every other breaker I rang nationally had sold theirs already, leaving me with the impression that it is a more common problem than I originally thought. The problem is now cured, the part comes with warranty and I will be careful to have this checked next time as after the first few times the light came on, a quick hook-up to a BMW laptop showed no trace of the fault code/warning light. I would now only buy an E61 with warranty and insist that it is throughly checked for leaks and the condition of the connected pipework is thoroughly examined.
