Koni FSD's
#11
GL! I hope they arrive this time and am curious about the fitting and driving experience.. I suppose you will also have a quick look at the rest of the suspension components while you're at it. Interesting whether everything is ok there or whether the replacement of some worn out bushings etc. can aslo contribute to improved suspension experience afterwards. At least I plan to check these things on mine..
What's the price you're getting them for? The cheapest I found is GBP 472 from the following two sources, but I guess cheaper is still possible?

guys, see below Rob Hall's report on FSDs from the E60 section. seems pretty impressive. can't wait for Keith's and Chesney's experience on a Touring..
"fsd's are now installed.
Only done around 40 miles on them so early days, but 1st impressions :
The fsd's are considerably more heavy than the stock dampers.
Took around 4 hours to fit.
They are quite impressive, they arnt a night and day improvement over the oe sport dampers but non the less, good roads with a slight ripple in them at low speeds are completely ironed out now, drain covers and medium faults in the road are barely noticable now, larger pot holes are still there with a slap rather than the sport damper shudder, road noise seems slightly reduced. The steering isnt affected by pot holes now were before the shudder would be felt thru the steering. Car feels better under braking. Car does feel more planted with the steering just giving you the feedback you want rather than telling you about every ripple in the road.
Havnt done any b road nippy driving yet so cant comment there, but yes a considerable improvement imo over the sport dampers.
Was a little nervy before fitting them if it was the right decision, but atm i am very pleased.
Have to say having now been intimate with the under pinnings of the e60, all credit to bmw for what is a very impressive bit of engineering design using light weight materials wherever possible, did seem slightly wrong putting the heavy fsd's on when bmw have obviously gone to so much trouble to reduce weight."

My Ride: E61 sold nice E91 335i Sport Touring now
Fitted mine last night. Didn't have any fitting issues thankfully as everything came apart easily. All in it took about 4 hours.
First impressions are that the ride is more supple. Def a bit more comfortable on bad roads but no adverse effects when throwing it around bends. Wouldn't say the difference is huge but it is noticeable. Guess my old shocks were actually ok so I'll keep them and if I change the car I might take these FSD's off as I was considering a 535d as my next car.
What I wasn't impressed by was the packaging. Not sure if this was Koni or the supplier as the shocks were no0t wrapped and had been rattling around in the big box and the paint on all was scuffed. I think this was the supplier as I doubt these were shipped like that from Holland!

How would you describe the improvement in comfort at lower (20-30 mph) and higher (60-100 mph) speeds - is it equally noticeable or is it more pronounced in a specific speed range?
I'd say it has improved the ride quality at all speeds. Was ragging it round a few bends on a 200 mile drive today and it seems just as good as OEM sport dampers but having the better ride makes it worthwhile. Seems to give you the best of both worlds although if you are purely looking to improve the handling then a set of proper sport adjustables would probably be better but on the rough roads we have I'd avoid very stiff dampers!

Thanks - I have a similar situation with very bad roads around where I live and I actually feel sorry for the car when I drive it in these conditions... So more comfort for me and the car is number one priority. Today I am putting the winter tyres on - 16" non-run flat which should be a dream compared to the summer 18" runflats. Step two will hopefully be the FSDs some time in spring before putting on non-runflat 18s for the summer again.
