After 4 years and 75k miles finally decided it is time to swap the car.
Hopefully doing a bit less mileage with full loads in future, so taken a shrink to a 330i M Sport Touring (essentials being panoramic sunroof, professional nav and light coloured interior).
Will be sad to see the 530d go, as after some early problems it has been a great long distance drive

Re depreciation - certainly don't believe it when salesmen say "BMW's don't depreciate much" when you buy a car. I knew it would plummet and it did.
The numbers
- new cost May 2004 - GBP 43,000
- purchase cost Sept 2004 - GBP 36,000 (so a staggering loss of nearly 2,000 a month - and this was when new model and rare)
- trade in price Aug 2008 - GBP 10,500
- private sale price - GBP 12,000
So 32p a mile, or 6,000 a year, in depreciation.
The reality is a Skoda Superb would be a better financial deal - it may have a marginally higher depreciation percentage, but the original cost would be much less.
But hey, you only live once and a great place to be for 75,000 miles.
And with fuel prices high, it could be time to go sensible with a 320d - but its also a good time to cut a deal on a 330i and if I do less miles the economics are fine
