My Ride: E61 530D M SPORT - Silver
Default

Hi

Sorry if this is covered else where, but i have looked without success.

I am looking to get my car enhanced by DMS, i have read plenty of posts about the fantastic improvement this make to the 530d. However on contacting my Insurance company (Esure) they were looking to increase my premium by a ridiculous amount.

Can anyone suggest an insurance company that is a bit more sympathetic to these mods, i have read that some insurance companies don't even increase at all, but the ones i have contacted either dont want to quote or want a stupidly inflated premium.

Although i would not feel happy about not declaring it to my insurers, can it be proven should you have an accident that your car has been modified? it would just be my luck and then insurance would be void.

Hope somebody can help

I agree with ats77. If you have no reason to report, why should you? What is the influence of that in anything concerning your insurance?

Never used them but Aplan seem to be mentioned alot in this context (UK).

See bmwland.co.uk

I believe that it is technically possible (but not easy) to check the map you have installed, to date there appears to be no record of it ever having happened tho'. I suspect that this is what the DMS 'invisibility' guarantee is relying on.

I don't know what the protocol is over in europe, but in the UK you are obliged to inform your insurance company of any modification you make to the car. Should your car be in an accident and they find modifications you have not informed them about it can give them a reason to refuse to payout your claim.

At least that is my understanding anybody in the UK no better????

Whilst i would prefer not to tell them, on a ?45,000 car is this a risk i can take

Does anybody know how "Invisible" the DMS remap is?????

I had DMS on a 911 and declared it, cost an extra ?400 and that was with Admiral. DMS confirmed it was untracable but I am not 100% convinced but have no proof either way, you have to do what you feel comfortable with, if you can't afford to insure then don't do it.

Don't worry about not telling your insurer - you would only be committing fraud

You won't mind me then stealing your uninsured car - that's only a technical breach as well

Keep on searching for a more considerate insurer - but most of the low cost companies keep low cost by avoiding higher risks, and they can probably prove people who mod cars are higher risk (even if you are not)

In Germany almost all insurance companys do not increase!

And the answer to the last question is YES! Even BMW and your dealer can (if they want to) see that you have modified the engine. Even if you remove it, they can prove that it has been done!

Even a external plug-in box?
If yes, how? From what data records can they see that a box was plugged?

About the mod vs insurance: be reasonable. As we have seen in this short informal thread, maybe insurances should be higher when power kits are applied. People do it be able to ride faster or accelerate better.
If that will increase risks or not, the insurance companies will be very good at protecting themselves. I would say, use your good judgement and act in good faith (just like you have to do when you do those over-the-speed-limit little runs.).
keeping in mind insureances will do what they have to to keep their interests.
You can also skip all this or even get a 520i or 520d and have no worries

I do not wanna argue, diff countries, diff rules. It is nowhere allowed or welcomed, and everybody does it...
all I can say, for the moment if teh ecu was not fcd up it never cause an accident, if you buy a 20" rim do you say it, it is also modification, my insurance cover all, also spoliers and stuff installed. Normally you have to say it, and normally than in the papers of your car has to publish all mods, and then??

it is not a fraud, man. My car came from BMW AG with reduced perfom. to avoid high taxes, so it was already chipped (downwards.-) by BMW itself, so much for chipping the engine, otherwise we have the warranty from the insatller, my shop also says ok to that...
