HPFP or LPFP (or both)?
Hello all. Maybe I should put this on the e60 forum, but I'll stick with my e61 brethren for now as we seem to have a knowledgeable crew chiming in here.
Before getting my e61 I had read about failing HPFPs to the point of BMW offering an extended warranty on the things. After reading multiple threads on a wide range of topics I have come across an upgrade for the LPFP using a Walbro pump assembly in place of the original. Here is at least one vendor offering such a prepackaged kit:
Products found matching 'LPFP' - n54Tuning.com
I don't work for these guys nor have I ever used their product. I just came across it and it seems like a decent kit.
My question is, is that LPFP aftermarket kit potentially needed? Is that a weak point on these cars? What is it fixing? Are both fuel pumps on these cars potentially crap?
Thanks,
Eric

I don't understand what the kit is supposed to do. Why would you install that along with your stock fuel pump? N54 tuning says their upgraded LFPF is supposed to be double the flow of the OEM unit and uses a Walbro F90000267 pump. You can find that pump separately for about $100.
If I had any concerns about the LPFP, then I would just buy a Walbro F90000267 pump and rebuild my existing unit.

I agree with you Jose. That's why I am asking the question here. Is this kit fixing a problem that doesn't exist or is the factory LPFP an inadequate design?
Thanks,

Well, I find a lot of press about failing HPFP's in the turbo engines, but practically nothing about non-turbo LPFP problems.
Seems to me the stouter LPFP upgrade, is about helping some with the problematic HPFP's, or running high concentrations of, or pure E85.
Makes me think that those of us with non-turbo engines are not likely to have LPFP issues or need to worry about improving flow. If you have a turbo or modified engine, then there seems to be benefit to adding another high flow pump upstream.
