The heated rear window on my 2004 Touring has failed - doesn't deice or demist at all. Reported it at the service today and they investigated. They charged me ?200 to confirm it doesn't work - checking the fuse and power supply with a multi-meter.
They say it is an "internal fault within the screen" (though not sure there are any internals, and don't think the elements are scratched). I can't quite remember the precise figures they quoted, but in the region of
* work to date ?200
* screen circa ?350
* fitting circa ?200
* VAT ?100
Total ? 850
Anybody else had this problem - or more importantly fixed this problem ?
PS - I seem to be debugging BMW's early touring tailgates -also 3 new support struts, new parcel shelf roller, new parcel shelf and now blind release failing also, but that's another story

Isn't there a way they can test continuity or resistance to see if there's a break in the circuit?

Can't you smash it and claim it on your Windscreen excess?

Two interesting suggestions ;-) Thanks
Certainly ain't forking out that much just yet - particularly as survived the winter not essential over the fabulous summer I am sure we are destined for (hope)
May do a bit of DIY research with a meter and wait and see

Thats just an out of control amount of money to pay for them to diagnose the problem, thats just offensive.
I'm not sure but from what I've been reading it seems that the UK service policy is far less favorable than the US one.
