Have you taken the brakelight spoiler off of the glass tailgate and checked the ribbon cable? There are a few connections behind the spoiler that go into a large Control Unit ..I would have a look there..
All you do is open the glass window remove the four plastic caps unscrew the four torx screws and slide the spoiler downwards an inch and it will come off. Then you can check your connections... they are behind the plastic covered 10" unit.
Hope this Helps....

Same problem with heated rear window.
Measured the fuse, all ok. Opened the hatch to access the radio controller.
Measuerd to see if I got some current tover those two cables. I found out that the grounding was broken.
Made a new ground connection inside the box where the radio contoll is! Works as a charm.
Good luck.

The cable for the heating window is on the left hinge. They are often broken on our E61, this is a problem.

Responding to old post, but I had a rear window defroster problem, and used Chasney72's great diagrams and instructions and found a broken ground (earth) wire just inside the left hinge on my '06 E61. The positive wire does appear to come in through the right hinge, however.

So you did, my apologies. I must have glossed over your post. In the spirit of correctness, I should add that I accidentally perpetuated someone's typo: It was Chesney72's and garychairson's posts on the "Tailgate Harness Replacement" thread that had great pictures and commentary on tailgate wiring. Just finished repairing a broken ground wire for the rear window defroster.

I have same problem with rear window. First fuses, then test relay. Then test the window itself.
I opened my IHKA panel, and i found burned chip inside. Havent got new panel yet but i hope this is the reason.
