I got it via a salvage company via E-bay who just received a 2008 model E61. So not specifically a BMW salvage company.
The cause might still be the same in your case. Initially I didn't see any difference either when looking at the car. Only the I-drive warning came on. However over a month it gradually became visible. I suggest you go to the dealer so they can make the assessment (will cost you about ?90 as they always charge that regardless). If they then tell you that it needs replacement then you request goodwill and at the same time look for alternative solutions (like salvage parts and or having them fitted by another cheaper garage)

Good luck

Hi, where did you get your salvage parts from?

I have the same error message which appears intermittently. Yesterday, it was appearing all the time (everytime not long after starting the engine) then today not at all. There is no difference that I can see in the level of the back end and have booked the car into the dealer to be looked at. Trouble is that the warranty has just expired only a couple of weeks ago and I'm worried that they're going to try quoting some extortionate sum to fix it.

If the back end hasn't dropped what's the most likely cause of the problem? I would have thought it wasn't the compressors if the level of the car is fine?

I had the same issue, especially during cold weather, and the BMW tech told me there is a time limit for the levelling procedure so if it takes too long for some reason (for example a small leak in a hose and/or dirt in the system) it will give the same error message as a total failure, even if everything works pretty much as normal. He advised me to take a look at it asap as a damaged hose = dirt gets into the system and eventually ruins the compressor.
