Has anyone calculated the total cost of all the regular servicing that an extended maintenance contract will cover to see if it makes any sense to buy the plan up front, as in now after we just bought an 08 535xi touring mt6 ?

It is a "cpo" so it has warranty out to 100,000 miles and 3 more years from the end of this month.

Obviously the same money can make a few $ sitting in an account while waiting for each maintenance interval to come along but I am guessing paying cash each time could ad up to significantly more than the contract cost.

Don't think you can compare GM's program with BMW's as the latter pays 100% for everything except tires. Not the case with GM plan. Also if there is a significant problem with the car during what is the warranty program and you don't have one it's going to be very, very expensive.

I don't know what GM has to do with this? I am talking about the BMW extended service contract.... either you pay now, buying the plan, or you obviously pay for your own oil changes, brake rotors, etc after 50,000 miles when the oem service coverage runs out.

I am not talking about the warranty either, it's the service plan, it covers the maintenance. It has nothing to do with warranty coverage. While a car is under warranty, "a significant problem" would be covered by the warranty so I'm not sure what any of your post means.

Maybe I didn't make the question clear:

Does anyone have any idea what all the standard services cost (from 50,000 miles up to 100,000miles) as compared to the cost of the service plan?

I have the maintenance pack up to 60,000 miles (car now at 47,000). It covers everything even wiper blades and it was very nice to take it to BMW and walk away with no cost, very, very nice !!! would seriously, make me consider an extended maintenance pack. But I have the E61 and I;m waiting for the suspension failure.

We just bought a CPO 530 and was in the same position where we had to decide to go with MP or not and we decided not to.
Brakes: Rotors/pads < $400 parts +$ 200 labor ( $600 tops )
Coolant: $100
Engine oil: $100 every 5000 miles ( 25,000 miles in 2 years adding upto $500 )
Filters $100

Total for maintanance: $1200 give and take and ofcourse these prices are at an indy..

So we passed on the MP...

It's wonderful that the dealer can't even respond to my emails asking what is the presumed cost of maintenance over the same period were I to just pay for it every time myself. I asked both the finance department person as well as the head of service.

It sounds like putting the money into an interest bearing location and using as needed would make more sense than giving it to BMW to play with!

I recently wrestled with this too and passed on the maintenance contract, it was about 2,400 - which pretty much adds up to four or five oil changes and new brakes. I reasoned that if I were to regularly take my car to a dealer for the oil changes, brakes, etc. that the contract covers, I would be more apt to have them fix the other things not covered and pay more for those there.

service manager says "brake job would be about $1600" ! Seriously? My Audi S4, which has bigger brakes, just got new front rotors at the dealer for $400....

A. I don't think bmw rotors for this car are going to be $400 each, but if they were, it isn't likely you'd use up the rear ones yet is it?

B. I thought the extended maintenance plan was an additional 2 years and up to 100,000 miles. I don't think the oil change covered is every 5000 miles, isn't it higher like 7500.

Dealer price is more always high and ridiculous. You can get some very good aftermarket performance rotors and pads installed for half of that $1600.

Oil change is about $70 a pop (this is the price from my dealer). I say keep the money, put it in a "high yield" CD account and watch it grow... slowly.

I think I'll be passing on the maintenance contract.

Thanks to everyone.
