Electric tailgate

Anybody know where the hydraulic pump is located for the e61 electronic lift tailgate?

Is it possible just to remove the electric/hydraulic main tailgate arms and replace with the old fashioned straightforward reliable gas struts? Would it upset the Electrics?

im so thrilled with my 530d touring, I’m looking at buying another one or a 535d touring alongside.

Yes, you can remove the pump and replace the left side strut with a normal strut. I bought an E61 this summer where the previous owner had done that. I wanted the feature back so bought a used pump and hydraulic arm. The pump is on the left side of the trunk behind where the satellite radio module and amplifier are. If you open the cover, then pull back the liner you will see the pump. Most of the time when there are problems the pump simply is low on fluid. I have a spare strut now but I have a feeling the shipping would be pretty darn high to send to you.

You will have a code about the angle sensor not being correct, but it isn’t a check engine light or anything and you will have no other problems. The hydraulic lines have quick disconnects on the pump but they are crimped to the hydraulic arm so you would have to cut them in order to remove the hydraulic arm.
