Hi guys

I'm looking for new tyres to mine new 19" wheels (m-style 172), and I'm considering Goodyear Eagle F1 or Dunlop Sport Maxx.

Dimensions:

Front: 245/35-19
Rear: 275/30-19

The price in Norway is approx. the same for both manufactures: 4 tyres 944 EUR or 1350 USD.

What would you choose? Any experience? Other high performance tyres?

hi whein10, why you don't considering Michelin PS2 or Pirelli PZero?

The tyres you mentioned are quite more expensive. Approx. 450 EUR. So I will go for cheaper tyres. Thanks anyway.

I would go for Sport Maxx; they have received better ratings in different tests. Another tyre that is on the way up and is receiving better and better score is Hankook. The 18" version came in third after Continental Sport Contact and Michelin PS2 in a test recently. Could be worth checking up!

Hi,

I've had SportMAXX in exactly the same dimension as you are referring to. There were a hell of a problem with tires being flattened during night and vibrating the first 30 - 40 km the day after. This is supposedly (according to Dunlop) a common problem with nylon reinforced high performance tires. I even got my front tires replace - but with no improovment.
Never had that symptom though on my Michelin PS1's nor my Continental SportContact 2's (also in the same dimensions).

They might have solved this issue now as it was a couple of years ago.

Just for you to be aware about the potential problem.

/R

I have the Dunlop Sport Maxx on my Z3 Roadster 2.8. They are quiet with good dry road grip; since I don't drive my Z3 when it rains or snows I can't predict how they handle in those conditions. The break-away is gentle and without any noise - so it's good news / bad news; I'd prefer to have some audible warning when they're going to let go! Tread wear isn't an issue as my Roadster is my occasional car. That said, they do flat-spot when parked for 5-6 days.

For more real-world info you should check TireRack's surveys and reviews.

I purchased 4 good year F1 Eagles about 3 weeks ago (18 inch, 245 wide)
They replaced my original Run flat Tyres (i have a spare little tyre in the back so I'm ok)
No issues so far. A little bit more noise but not really noticable/annoying.
Nice look as well (the profile) and grip seems to be fine as well. So I'm pretty happy.
Perhaps also try to find reviews online via tyre test sites. That's who I made my decision
Good luck

Thanks for many good answers. I will try to read some tyre tests before my I make my final decision.

Anyone out there who has experience with Nankang NS-2 tyres? They are half the price of Eagle 1 and Sport Maxx.

bertolli 07-29-2009 03:14 AM

Based on experience in the past with Nankangs under my Alfa 166 I say: DON'T do it.
They looked nice and where cheap however they were noisy (especially when braking it felt like I was driving a 4x4 SUV) and also they caused vibrations which never disappeared even after balancing several times. After a couple of months I took them off and replaced them with Michelins.
Waste of Money. I don't believe in spending too much money on tyres but sometimes going cheaper does ruin your driving experience. And then it's not worth the savings....
