I'm considering replacing my X5 3.0d (that I like a lot!) for a 525d Touring. Anyone has done this change? What are the impressions? Thanks.

Tough choices !
I traded my X5 3.0d MY2002 for a 525d Touring.
They both give a superb, but completely different, ride.
If you're addicted to the 'king of the road' feel, stick to your X5 (in 2007 there's a new X5).

I made the change because I love the looks of the new 5 series, it has more space in the luggage compartment (I have a young daughter and 2 labradors) and has the newest (better) goodies (like I-drive, nav, etc.)
And the 2.5d engine has the same characteristics as the 3.0d MY2002, the diference is that the car weights 500 kg less

I guess it all comes down in a matter of taste, there both fantastic cars.

Greetz,
Hans

Hi
I've changed my X5 3.0d 09/03 for an E61 3.0d and i haven't regret it !
My X5 was full option with 20" wheels and was also tuned but you can't compare both cars because there is a huge gap between them.
Like Hans NL said, the E61 has more new stuff and much more space AND of course a newer look then the "old" X5.
The only thing i can't get used of is the feeling that no other car have then an X5 when you're on the road ... the height ... the impressive front ...
It will not be my last X5 but until the new model isn't released i'll continue enjoying my brand new 5 !
Hope this helps ;-)

Regards
Steven

just a similar comparison: I changed a X5 4.4i for a 545i Touring.

the 5- series is much more a drivers car and expect for the X5's advantage having a magnificent high seat position and much better all-weather conditions (snow) the 5 series is for me clear winner.
the 5 is what I call sheer drivining plesasure

success

P.S. If I would live in the country where snow is everyday's business I would go for a 530iX Touring

There were two comments which I find hard to believe.

1. Does the E61 actually have more space than an X5? Two posters actually said much more space. I find that hard to believe although, my X5 3.0 really is lacking behind the second row.
2. Does the 525 actually seem as fast as the X5 3.0? I test drove the 525 recently and I found it slower. My X5 3.0 seems to have more torque thus giving the impression of speed in the lower gears...ahem I mean lower speeds..I have an automatic.

I ask this because here in Taiwan the distributor only imported the 525 and the 545 Touring models, but they have the 530 sedan. I found the 545 way over priced here in Taiwan (double the price of the USA) the 525 was too slow and the 530 just right. I would really prefer the Touring model, but the driving feel seemed slower than the X5 3.0.

Please advise.

The X5 is a (fine) old car and the E61 a new one.
New X5 (or will it be called X6) will be late next year on the market.

Go for the comfort: E61 530xDA!!!

Come on guys, is the 525 really faster than the 3.0 X5 that I drive now? It didn't seem like that on the short test drive I took.

According to the UK BMW website, the performance figures are as follows:

Model 0-100kph

X5 3.0i 8.3sec
X5 3.0d 8.3sec
525d 8.3sec
525i 7.8sec

Probably much closer than many of you thought. But, if you're thinking of a 5 series - consider the 535d. It'll leaves all of them in its wake!

My X5 3.0d was, because of the older MY02 engine, slower (about 10 sec 0-100 km/h).
Torque and HP comparable with my new 525d, both automatic gearshift (the 525d weights about 400 kg less ).

cheers
