Default E61 rear light issues - getting hot - same ground issue as the E60?

Working my way through the issues with my recent acquisition, a 2007 E61 M-sport 530i. The rear lights are confusing me.

Problem: intermittent rear brake/reverse/fog lamp malfunction messages on the i-drive display. The lights sometimes work, sometimes don't but they never all permanently don't work.

The lights on an E61 are different to an E60 and are spread across both the tailgate and the main body. The light inner cluster on the main body shows signs of high heat, as per the attached photo. It's on the same socket in the same spot on the other side also. The bulbs are not blown. The main harness/plug that goes into each cluster shows no sign of being burnt out on any of the pins/wires.

Do i need to solder in a ground somewhere? If so, how do i determine which metal contract strip on there to join it to?

Thanks in advance
