Well, actually the year and starting letter in the licenseplate no have no relation...it just happened that way...but you probaly know that already
They started with the letter 'A' (obviously) in early 70's and went on from there, letter by letter, number by number. With some exceptions. For a brief period, late 80's I think, they handed out licenseplates starting with 'P' or was it 'PP' for privately imported cars. I don't know if that was on purpose (so car dealers easily would be able to distinguish a car sold in Sweden from an imported one) or just a coincidence?
Nevertheless, plates starting with the letter 'P' came back in the late 90's...
From time to time V?gverket re-use old numbers from scrapped cars (about 2 million in stock) and they assure that they will not run out of combinations within a foreseeable future
but for system reasons they have chosen to hand out new combinations over the years.Now, they are re-using old plate no's after the 'X'-combinations ended...I got mine a couple of weeks ago and my letters are FKA...just for the info: The letter F was used on cars in mid 80's as far as I can remember.
And yes, they filter out some combinations considered to be offensive
For example with the 'X': XTC, XTZ, XXL, XXX och XUK

The are now using old numbers they have used before, since they are about to run out of numbers.. hehe..
An example is our E60. We bourght it brand new in Stockholm, and got UTW as starting letters. I've checked our old registration plate up a few days ago, and there is now a Ford Fiesta driving around with our old number! WTF!!
Your new car looks very nice. Our E60 is now 3 years, and if we still was living in Sweden, we would most likely have traded in our E60, for a LCI 530dA (E61) mit alles extra
