hi there! I was rookie at diesel XXX half year before - my current 530D was my first experience in this field. Do you consider 525/530 gasoline ones? frankly saying , when I sat into my "old" 523 couple months ago, I was surprized, how SILENT gasoline engine is! I miss it a little bit...
I considered a 530i, but just love the torque (i.e. low end power) of the diesel so much that I went for the 530d with an auto.

(A 545i would have been nice, but that just made no sense what so ever on the money side -- I did consider it for a long time though )

A mapped car will be faster in that senario but if you map his 530d which costs the same as mapping yours he will have 275+bhp and be faster than your car.

But if he remapped it too, he'd be much faster.
I've remapped mine to 260hp+ (it's about 262), no way a remapped 525d will keep up.

I think Dandle stated an important point; the 530d's on the second hand market tend to be better equiped and when you compare them with well equiped 525d's, then there is not a lot of difference in price from what I could see in Germany. (I only looked for M-Sport models)

However if you can get a much better deal on the 525d, maybe one with a more basic spec and add kit after importing it, then the remap approach seems to make a lot of sense and gives you the best of both worlds. (I just moved to Denmark so appreciate what a nightmare and how restrictive the HUGE car taxes are in the Nordics )

Its adaptive bi-xenon headlights with washers.
Thanks, well I have them on my 525d so it must be a fairly good spec.

Only thing I don't have is Sat Nav.

My 04 530d is remapped at ESS Tuning to 275hp and 600 nm. Your 525d has 50 hp and 100nm lesser power remapped. Its a huge difference! No way I would buy a 525d when I can afford a 530d.

530d prestanda is due to better inntake manifold, larger injectors and turbo. Buy 530D !

And pay your shirt off.... with hk and engine volume taxes in our contry. Where do you get a 535d remapped to 680 nm ? The highest nm remap of the 535d I`ve seen is 620 nm at esstuning.no

Besides it`s not adviceable to get more than 600nm in BMW`s automatic transmission.

Ziptuning.nl tunes it to 670NM, but i've seen several go over 680. (A 530d can be tuned to 620NM's, so a 535d can obviously go higher than that)
I've had mine limited to 600NM's because of the transmission limitation. (It's fun to go fast, but not if you're breaking stuff )

What is the "visability package" ?

My 525d is 2497 cc as listed under http://www.parkers.co.uk

Generally you will pay more for a 530d as they are more sought after.

Hi This is my first post in this forum, and I'm also considering E61 525d vs 530d , the issue is that I can afford a face lift 525D or a pr-faselift 530, considering tuning either one, but whats most value for money?, living in Norway so this as all to do with tax regulation. As I see it with a face lift you still get a 3ltr engine, and you get a newer gear box + all the upgrades from 2005/6 that's comparable in price in Norway with a 525 2008. On the other hand if the mechanical differences between the new 525 and old 530 is there, it might be worth mapping a old 530 instead of a new 525?
My main consern about mapping is the automatic gear box, have heard that the gear box is the same on 525 and 530 pre-face lift , and the 535d got a stronger one to keep up with the torque. Dont know what's trough for the face lift version. If I should be wise a 520d would be enough but a BMW deserves a 6 cylinder engine (as minimum)..
