I've noticed my car (E61 530d) makes an intermittent hydraulic hiss and click approx once a minute when it's stationary and parked. Is this something to do with the self levelling rear suspension? Anybody else noticed this? I asked my dealer and they just said bring it in and well have a look.... I thought they might just tell me if the car should be doing something when it's off? It is more noticable when I have my trailer connected which led me to think it was something to do with the self levelling.

It's the self leveling suspension. Stand next to the car and hold on hand on the back of the car... you can feel it move up/down....

The plot thickens..... I disconnected the trailer this evening and went to start the car. The starter turns continually and the engine does not start. Tried it a few times and now the battery's getting flat. This is the second time it's done this. It seems to start after a battery charge. Is this an immobiliser problem? Have I flooded the engine by not waiting for the coil to warm up?

I love the car but it does have so many niggles - cup holders that eject half full cans of coke, rear boot cover that sometimes lifts when you open the boot, and sometimes doesn't. A CD player that starts at seemingly random parts of the CD. The MP3 capable CD changer that won't read any of my MP3 discs, the tyre pressure alarm that keeps going off even when the pressures are fine etc etc......

It is a great car but I can't help think it's not a fully tried and tested product.

BMW have taken the car in - no fuel apparently but gauge reads 1/4 tank left and 98 miles range. Odd........

My xit does it also. I am almost certain that it is the self-leveling system, as I have had mutilpe GM cars with self-leveling that did the same thing. Also, when my son, who works at the local BMW dealer heard it, he was not surpriced. Instead, he described it as the car "farting."

Turns out to have had a faulty fuel tank level sender - apparently the car has 2 of these in the tank and 1 was faulty.

Strange how it misread twice a few months apart.
