1st of March means new statistics for car sales (Sweden), and even though the diesel share for the 5-series has been high before it's now at 93% almost overwhelming! The 3-series has a 75-25 ratio in favour of the diesel.

i think someone once said the last internal combustion engine produced will be a diesel and that was said a long time ago, I too have just ordered a Diesel(520d touring) and that will be my first ever.. apart from a model aeroplane engine I used to have . Im already investigating a chip but you dont get something for nothing and I dont understand the tradeoffs yet.
My baby arrives 1st april, hopefully the snow in stockholm will be somewhat reduced and I can use the summer tires from the start(maybe floats and a propeller will be a better option given the amount of snow on the ground)

They are rough on idle after a cold start, but makes it all up on long-distance driving. Amazing acceleration from 120-200 km/h, 1000 km's between fuelstops and 2500 rpm's at 180 km/h.
Copenhagen-Austria next week!

Yeah, they also make a nice hole in your budget after like 100-150k km cause of a poor quality diesel (fuel), bad driving habits (turbo shutoffs), poor design (exhaust manifold, egr ventil, injectors, turba vgt actuator, partikel filter, glow sparks electronics...). And I am not talking about 8,25 liters of oil to dump on each change either, that is just insane... Do not get me wrong, I like 535d, it is a great car to drive when it is new... but not to mantain it after some dummie owner... 530i? you must be an idiot to do any damage... So NEW diesel, why not... USED one, well, it depends...

My opinion: Let's just keep on burning the fuel we personally prefer to, be happy and pay for the maintenance..

i have a petrol car as well that requires a lot of expensive oil when you change it, so business as usual. but i guess it would be the same for any poorly maintained car, i wouldnt buy a used porsche that wasnt looked after correctly either.. they have high enough running costs as it is.

Don't worry, you're not alone
I'm a huge diesel fan, having driven 3er and 5er diesels since 2001. We all know they're great on the motorways, but I also think they're great around the city (with a Sprint Booster ), because you have all that torque available at low revs to quickly throw you forwards when you need it. And the engine sounds pretty damned good in some of the more recent models; a friend of mine has the E90 325d (3 liter 6 cyl 197ps) and it sounds like a beast from the inside -- its also great to drive in the 3er M-Sport with the manual gear box
We talk a lot about the bigger engines here in the 5er forums, but I think it you are comparing a 2.0 liter petrol with a 2.0 liter diesel, or the 1.8d / 1.8i models, then the diesel becomes an even more obvious choice. Those 118d/318d's are great fun to drive, give you mind blowing economy if you can control yourself(!), and are also able to cruise/accelerate at relatively high speeds on the motorway.
The only alternative for me was the petrol as a V8, to make sure I still had that "diesel torque" driving experience. I have to say I am loving my petrol V8, however I am only doing around 5000km per year on normal travel + some journies for fun, so this purchase is just about passion and has absolutely nothing to do with common sense what so ever!

Depending on whether I have done a lot of city driving or motorway driving, when I fill up the tank, my V8 tells me I have a 450-650km range My diesels were telling me anything between 750-1000km (the LCI 525d being the best) -- I think that says it all
