Newer = Better (usually) if they both check out okay, I would go for the 2008!

I have owned pre-LCI and LCI E60/E61s. If you are going to have an automatic gearbox, then the choice between the two has to be the LCI without a doubt. Even with a remap and a Sprintbooster, my pre-LCI 530dA did not run as nicely as my LCI 525dA -- it had more power, but the auto was terrible in comparison. With my current pre-LCI petrol V8, I have to admit the pre-LCI auto isn't as bad, but still nowhere near as good as the LCI auto. As NavarroOne mentioned, the LCI auto can be easily upgraded to the Sports Automatic if it is not supplied with it from the factory.

As for the injector issues, if that was an early issue with the early 535i TT engine, then I assume they have resolved that by now, like you imply in your original post.

So if I have understood it correctly, my advice is definitely go for the 2008, providing it is the LCI version.

Good luck and happy shopping...
Must not know much about the N54....
Problem not solved in the slightest.... just look at the number of threads from new/CPO 535i owners with issues in the last week and a half in the main E60 forum...

Do your home work before getting either. Look for Fuel pump issues on the 08 or Electrnic/Sun roof issues on both. The lifter on the N52 ( 07) are really the only issue that pops up from time to time and tends to be fairly rare , but , like the waste gate chatter on the N54 have no performance/durability effect on the the motor. It's all just crappy engineering on both parts, And if you need more info on either go to the bimmerfest.com of E90post.com and read up on the engine sections of the forums on both issues.

It pays to do your home work....

I have no experience with both these models, but it seems to me that a late built '07 will have less structural problems, than an early '08 LCI which still has "child diseases" from the facelift...

It also seems that problems with the '08 model are larger in number, when looking at the number of forum topics...but of course I didn't count them, so how really knows??

I understand that the '08 does not have CPO or other warranty? If so, definitely go with the '07....

I couldn't get interested in the 530... it really didn't offer any better performance than our 1999 528 wagon.

Love our 535... or maybe it's lust?

Oh, and I see lots of 535's on the road and they all seem to be running just fine. I'm sure some cars have problems but I don't think the numbers are nearly as large as they appear... happy people don't take as much time to post & whine.

Well eventhough I own a '06 E61 530xi and a '07 E90 335i and have experience with both motors, I still would opt for the '08 535xi.

As for the CPO warranty the OP does not mention it doesn't come with one, what it doesn't have is CWP (I'm assuming he means cold weather package).

Concerning the HPFP (high pressure fuel pump) problems that the N54 seems to be plagued with, funny thing is that eventhough when I first repplied to this thread I had no issues with my E90. My HPFP just got replaced this past week! But I would still not hesitate in getting a 535xi, actually after the confirmation that there will be no more 5 series Tourings in NA I have asked my SA to keep an eye out as of next year for a '09 E61 535xi to replace our current 530xi.

I love the randomness of the HPFP failure as written by multiple people on multiple websites (unhappy, whining sorts as the previous post mentioned)
Nothing like pressing the gas and ......

sorry forgot to mention the joy of not knowing when the sunroof will leak into the electronics!

All

thank-you all for the feedback. My decision was made easier by the sale of the 530xi. So I made an offer on the 535XI. Yes, I'm a bit worried about the HPFP but the 10year warranty makes it a easier to take. The car itself still has 1 year left on the warranty. I will let you know how things go.

lets just hope you don't have to change it out 4+ times a year..

Make sure you check Under the rear load floor for any signs of water or corrosion on any of the electrical components. Also look for Bulges in the seal on the sun roof or dry rot.

Glad I read about the sunroof problem as I was unaware of this issue!
