This is actually not a problem for me, but a friend is looking for a UK dealer around Oxford/Midlands area who will be sympathetic to his DMS remap. I think he's worried that they may try to invalidate his warranty or something even though I have assured him that I've never had a problem. The dealer I go to (South Croydon area) is apparently too far away for him, so I said I'd ask on this forum.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Most dealers I have used don't even seem to notice. Certainly Coopers Reading seem not to... and probably neither will North Oxford Garage. I have just had the car fully re-coded to fix a couple of faults (incl. trasmission slam, so they must have driven it), and no one at Coopers raised any issues.

I think if someone is making a warranty claim for something expensive (say a gearbox) that could have been affected by a remap and that does not normally fail, then the scrutiny may start in earnest...

This was my opinion. I think my friend is just being a bit paranoid...

So your remap would have been over-written if it had been fully re-coded?

It is just not in the dealers interest to look too hard.

As far as I know, if their software is overwritten by the dealer, BMS will perform their work again for free.

Remaps are 'ghost' programs, they sit on top of the BMW mapping, as soon as a car is recoded the ghost get overwritten, so needs the rempa re-installed.

I hadn't realised how good my DMS map was until I lost it after a recode.

My experience is that most dealers counldnt give a monkeys as long as they get paid out for any warranty works.

I would go in advertising the fact that youve had a remap, but Id go as far to say that most technicans drive so many different types of engine/gearbox configurations in varying BMWs, that they'd be hard pressed to spot the difference with a remapped car unless driven back to back.

Looking for a remap actually involves getting into the ECU separately much like what DMS do when they put it on. Most dealers never remove parts to check the individual software on them they simply plug the computer into the main port and let the computer do the work. So unless the suspect your car and really have something against you most often they dont care about your remap.

I agree 100% here.
Dealers need the maintenance work on your car so I talked to them straight and gave them the option of maintaining the car and not messing about with the remap or, my business, including future vehicle purchases was going elsewhere. Guess what ?
