I have just bought 2009 E61 LCI touring. The car is very nice compared to my prevoius VW Passat Variant. There's one thing which pisses me off. Between the rear roof loudspeakers there's a bulge, which is probably due to the roof mechanism. Something above the bulge makes a damn nasty clattering sound when ever the road is bumpy. And where I come from there are lots of speed bumps and holes so the clattering can be heard all the time. The roof itself functions ok (knocks on wood).

Any ideas how to fix it?

I had the same problem.
After investigating whats going on in there, I found out that one of the brackets at the back that hold the roofliner in place had fallen out of its place (whenever the roof liner was previously detached at the rear end) and found its way into this bulge. So at every bump or vibration it hit some metal parts above it and sounded extremely annoying.

My advice is, see in this thread how to detach and pull down the rear end of the roof liner:

And then look whats exactly in the bulge and is making those noises

OK, thanks a lot! First I'll remove the loudspeakers and take a peek through the speaker hole.
