The other evening the CEL came on, got the car scanned the next day and the codes were:

2A98 crankshaft inlet camshaft correlation
2A99 crankshaft exhaust camshaft correlation

Reset the codes and I was on my way.

This afternoon, I suspected the CEL was going to come on when I felt the engine a little rough (same symptoms as the other night). Two seconds later, the CEL came on again. Overall the car runs well.

Two hours later, the CEL was gone. I'm sure the codes are still in the system. Can I have defective solenoids?

I experienced a similar issue with my inline six, and had to get the sensors for the inlet and exhaust changed. If this is the same - stop driving with your car as motor management is fault due to faulty data from the two sensors.

^^ thank you. I have a service call scheduled for next week. The car runs well, no issues aside from the CEL coming on again this morning. God damn cars have too many sensors...

... following BMW's recommendations it's quite an undertaking; change sensors, run the engine, empty oil, new oil, run the engine again... takes a while. (IF it's the same issue, mind you!) Good luck and please post an update next week!

The 1st time I had the issue was in October 2011, at the time we did an oil flush and replaced it with new oil. Now the CEL is back and will get the sensors checked under warranty. The CEL is now off...

Took the car in this morning...and in typical fashion, the BMW dealer did not get around to working on it today

Got my car back, changed Vanos solenoid inlet and exhaust (p/n 11367585425) under cpo warranty.

While in service, got two other items checked out.

1) Under cold start I had a "squeeky" belt, turns out they replaced the belt tensioner (p/n 11287530314) and belt (p/n 11287628650).

2) Under cold start, when heating system in auto mode it would "squeek" for a bit until it warmed up. They changed the blower unit (p/n 6411693391).

All under cpo, had to pay the deductible.
