Hi Everyone
New to the forums. Had 3 series for last 10 years now in process of buying a one year old E61.
Since I don't know the cars I wanted to get some buying advice.
I am particularly interested in one car but wondered what those with E61 experience thought.
520d touring.1.5 yrs old towed a carvan twice with factory fitted hitch. Had some damage ( post scrape) on rear door repaired.
Does towing ruin these cars - particularly the 2.0d ? must have been struggling to tow with a small engine and heavy car.
I traced the previous owner and they towed only couple of times around 3-400 mile round trips
It manual (I prefer this to work the engine and gives more control on rural roads, in my opinion - plus extra 80 miles range per tank
Very good price - about 2k below book
Any guidance, advice, opinions gratefully received.
Thanks

Towing is not going to do any harm for the car if it?s been done correctly. With this I mean for example using the correct gear and clutching it right.
I tow my trailer (total weight with sled 750kg) with 4th gear so its lighter for the whole engine & drivechain. People tow trailers with 1.2 L engines so I don?t see any problems with that BMW 2.0 L, hence it?s quite strong engine.

I second all above.

You do not need worry at all such a seldom towing. BMW is designed towing in mind. For example DSC has towing program, PDC swiches automatically off when trailed is coupled etc. By the way - the many 5-seres cars are allowed tow up to 2000kg trailer.

520D has a great engine. Despite of small size it's really capable. But I would go for automatic also with 520D. You should test drive 520D with automatic!

Good luck with purchase!

Thanks for the guidance guys. I did test drive the 520d automatic, only on a short city route, and was really impressed by the auto, it was very quick and the specification 0-60mph shows only a 0.1 second (one hundreth) difference to the manual which is incredible for an auto. I drive a lot in city with lots of speed cameras and find the manual allows me more control, I just leave it in 3rd grear and it holds the speed limit, whereas auto can run-away. Also, the extra 80miles range from the manual box is quite a lot as I do high mileage and pay for my own fuel Once had a 325 perol 2001 and the auto box a really terrible, my 318 manual was faster around town and up hills - althuogh that was an old style auto box
